  2. Key Terms Used by the Mishna • Pahsul – not valid or “kosher,” and does not fulfill the mitzvah requirement • Kasher – valid and “kosher,” and does fulfill the mitzvah requirement

  3. Key Terms Used by the Mishna • Amah/Amot – a measurement. • An amah is approximately 18 inches long. • Tefach/Tefachim – a measurement. • A tefach is approximately 10 centimeters.

  4. The Sukkah: A temporary home Definition of “temporary” Reminds us of the temporary huts that the Jews lived in while they traveled in the desert

  5. Maximum Height • The Mishna begins: סוכה שהיא גבוהה מעשרים אמה, פסולה A sukkah that is taller than 20 amot is pahsul

  6. A SUKKAH THAT IS TALLER THAN 20 AMOT 20 amot 0 amot

  7. Why not? Two reasons סוכה שהיא גבוהה מעשרים אמה, פסולה A sukkah that is taller than 20 amot is pahsul People don’t usually look at things above 20 amot, which means that no one will see you sitting in the sukkah and doing the mitzvah. Anything built higher than 20 amot requires sturdier walls, which means that the sukkah won’t feel so “temporary” anymore.

  8. Not So Fast! Machloket Alert! • There’s another opinion in the Mishna רבי יהודה מכשיר Rabbi Yehudah says that a sukkah built taller than 20 amot is kosher

  9. Why? רבי יהודה מכשיר Rabbi Yehudah says that a sukkah built taller than 20 amot is kosher According to Rabbi Yehudah, the walls of the sukka should be as strong as possible.

  11. Things That Make A Sukkah Pahsul The Mishna mentions three things: 1 ושאינה גבוהה עשרה טפחים It is less than 10 tefachim high 2 ושאין לה שלוש דפנות It doesn’t have at least 3 walls ושחמתה מרובה מצילתה It has more sun than shade 3

  12. What’s common? These three things have a lot in common: ושאינה גבוהה עשרה טפחים It is less than 10 tefachim high ושאין לה שלוש דפנות It doesn’t have at least 3 walls ושחמתה מרובה מצילתה It has more sun than shade In each situation, the sukkah isn’t “livable” – it’s either too low, not protected with enough walls, or not protected from the sun

  13. So it’s built…now what? The Mishna tells us how to use the sukkah: כל שבעת הימים עושה אדם את סוכתו קבע, ואת ביתו עראי During the days of Sukkot, one should "live" in the sukkah

  15. The Bracha • Depending on what we eat, we recite the bracha of “leishev ba-sukkah” • Mezonot • Ha-motzi • Ha-gefen
