  5. WWI strains Russian economy • Nicholas leaves to personally lead army • Alexandra stays home to look after sick son, Alexei

  6. Gregory Rasputin • Convinces Alexandra he can heal Alexei • Alexandra so influenced by Rasputin, people lose faith in govt. • Nobles fearing for the monarchy take matters into their own hands

  7. Poisoned (didn’t die) • Shot in chest (ran away) • Shot in back (fell in snow) • Clubbed and beaten • Thrown into icy river CAUSE OF DEATH????

  9. March 1917 • Workers go on strike • “Bread, bread” • Military refuses to fire on crowd • Czar abdicates

  10. Radical group, Bolsheviks, take charge • Led by Vladimir Lenin

  11. The Bolsheviks take a new name • Communists

  12. Lenin signs treaty with Germany in WWI • Allies tried to help anti revolutionaries (Whites) in Russia defeat the Communists (Reds) so that Russian would rejoin as an ally

  13. July 1918 • The Czar, his wife, and 5 children were killed

  14. Communist Russia now called Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) or the Soviet Union

  15. 1924 • Lenin dies • Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin fight for leadership • Stalin has Trotsky killed and Stalin becomes communist dictator
