  4. WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is when someone hurts or scares another person repeatedly. The behavior is never appropriate and is intentional. It is a repeated and hurtful act and involves an imbalance of power. The innocent one being bullied feels alone, depressed and scared and feels they have nowhere to turn. Bullying includes: • Callingsomeone hurtful and derogatory names • Spreading lies and bad rumors about someone • Being mean and teasing someone • Hitting, punching, shoving, spitting and physically hurting someone • Social exclusion or isolation ... not including someone is a group  • Getting certain kids or teens to "gang up" on others • Having money or other things taken or damaged  • Being threatened or being forced to do things

  5. What is Cyber bullying? • Happens on-line or electronically. It is when kids or teens bully each other using the Internet, mobile phones or other cyber technology. • This can include: • Sending mean text, e-mail, or instant messages • Posting nasty pictures or messages about others in blogs or on Web sites • Using someone else's user name to spread rumors or lies about someone • Stealing someone's password and spreading rumors about someone else making it seem like that person is the Cyber bully.

  6. About Teen Dating Violence DO YOU KNOW THAT TEEN DATING VIOLENCE IS A FORM OF BULLYING? • Dating violence affects about one in ten teen couples. (1 IN 10)-National Institute of Justice • Teenagers can often misinterpret abusive and violent behavior as a show of love. • Hitting, yelling, threatening, name calling, and using and hurting you sexually isn't love!

  7. FORMS OF BULLYING Hostility and aggression directed towards a victim who is physically or emotionally weaker than the bully are more obvious signs of bullying. This behavior causes pain and distress for the victim. • Physical Bullying is the most obvious form of intimidation and can consist of kicking, hitting, biting, pinching, hair pulling, and making threats. A bully may threaten to punch you if you don't give up your money, your lunch, etc. • Verbal Bullying often accompanies physical behavior. This can include name calling, spreading rumors, and persistent teasing.

  8. FORMS OF BULLYING • Racist Bullying can take many forms: making racial slurs, spray painting graffiti, mocking the victim's cultural customs, and making offensive gestures. • Emotional Intimidation is closely related to these two types of bullying. A bully may deliberately exclude you from a group activity such as a party or school outing.

  9. FORMS OF BULLYING • Cyber bullying is one or a group of kids or teens using electronic means via computers and mobile phones (emails, Web sites, chat rooms, instant messaging and texting) to torment, threaten, harass, humiliate, embarrass or target another kid or teen. • Sexual Bullying is unwanted physical contact or abusive comments.

  10. QUIZ AM I A BULLY? • You've teased kids, been mean to them, made fun of the way they look or speak You’ve spread nasty rumors about a kid at school • You’ve called kids names and have publicly humiliated them • You've repeatedly teased kids, been mean to them, made fun of the way they look or speak You’ve repeated kicked, shoved, punched or physically pushed another kid at school – just because • You spread nasty rumors, humiliated another kid, and/or posted negative photos about them through emailing, instant messaging, texting, or created a web site with negative posts about them  • You and your friends have intentionally and for no reason kept another kid or kids from sitting at your lunch table at the school cafeteria, from playing with you, or from joining you at any group activity If you answered these questions honestly and checked any of these circles then you are a bully.

  11. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! ITS NOT YOUR FAULT! WHAT NOT TO DO IF YOU ARE BEING BULLIED DON'T... • Think it's your fault. Nobody deserves to be bullied!  • Fight back or bully a person back  • Keep it to yourself and just hope the bullying will "go away." Make sure you report the bullying.  • Skip school or avoid school or after school activities because you're afraid of the bully  • Don’t be afraid to tell. Telling is NOT tattling! It's the right thing to do! • Hurt yourself. Nothing is that hopeless that it can’t be resolved. • If you are being bullied online, NEVER respond. This could actually make the bullying worse. Immediately tell your parents or a trusted family member. Have your parents block all communications from this person. Be sure to save evidence of the cyber bullying. If you get a nasty e-mail, print it out or save it so that you can show it to an adult.

  12. Is it worth being arrested or going to jail? Bullying & Cyber bullying can become a crime if you: • Physically assault someone • Harass someone especially if the harassment is based on gender or racism • Make violent threats • Make death threats • Make obscene and harassing phone calls and texts • Engage in Sexting • Engage in sextortion which is sexual exploitation • Use child pornography • Stalk someone • Commit hate crimes • Take a photo of someone in a place where they expect privacy • Engage in extortion

  13. What you can do… • Report bulling-tell an adult • Be a friend to someone who is bullied • Stand up to the bully If you feel safe and comfortable, tell the bully that what they are doing is mean and wrong. It's not cool and they should stop. Keep it simple. Do not bully them back. If you are not comfortable standing up to the bully, tell an adult.
