  8. Ohio’s Answer In 2009, Ohio House Bill 1 mandated a new licensure system for teachers, including an initial four-year Resident Educator license. Resident Educator licenses were first issued in January 2011.

Eligibility Requirements • Hold a valid resident educator license or alternative resident educator license of any type, or a one-year out of state educator license. • Be employed by an ODE-chartered educational entity, ODE or ODJFS licensed pre-school, Ohio correctional facility or an Ohio private educational agency. • Teach at least 2 classes or .25 FTE in their area of licensure • Be responsible for planning and delivering standards-based, preK-12 curriculum to students and evaluating their progress. • Work 120 days as defined by Ohio Revised Code • Be assigned an ODE-certified, trained mentor by their employer. • Private pre-schools and adult corrections facilities are eligible but not required. • Non-chartered, non-public schools are not eligible.

  11. What is Residency? Residency is a time to practice, refine, and gain a deeper understanding of the art and science of teaching under the guidance of a certified mentor and the support of a professional learning community.

Resident Educator: Year 1 During Year 1, the Resident Educator will • Communicate with mentor and principal • Use formative assessment activities to collect evidence and advance practice • Use the state-designed formative assessment tools (e.g., goal setting, self-assessment) • Document instructional meetings with mentor using the Collaborative Log • Complete the Year 1 Formative Progress Review • Maintain a collection of evidence and documents, a repertoire of practices, to inform summative assessment

  24. PART I: RESIDENT EDUCATORS IN YEAR 3

  25. Resident Educator: Year 4 Suggested Year 4 Teacher Leadership Activities Year 4 REs who successfully pass the RESA in Year 3, will participate in 3 teacher leadership activities. Suggestions for teacher leadership opportunities include but are not limited to the list below. Resident Educators will choose one activity from each of the following 3 categories: Deepening Content Expertise Collegial Professional Explorations Teacher Leadership Documentation of these activities will not be sent to ODE. At the end of Year 4, Program Coordinators will indicate in the CORE system that Year 4 REs have completed their requirements. Upon passing RESA and completing all Year 4 teacher leadership requirements, Resident Educators will apply for the 5-year professional license. Lead
