Mitigation Task Considerations: • The NTHMP must be able to maneuver itself to carry out its goals and objectives as defined by TWEA • TWEA says both mitigation and preparedness as activities to be carryout by the NTHMP • Mission statement needed to be used a guide for what the NTHMP needs to accomplish
Recommended Definitions • Recommended definitions are: • Mitigation: Any action taken to directly reduce or eliminate the risk to human life and property from a tsunami." • Preparedness: “Any action taken to enhance response to a warning or threat.”
Mitigation Includes • Signage for awareness • Developing evacuation maps and inundation maps from inundation models • Use of science and technology to identify and assess the hazard (e.g., DEMs and inundation models) • Development and Implementation of Community Education and Outreach Programs • Providing decision-makers with tools to develop tsunami hazard mitigation plans and procedures • Support land use planning • Support improved building codes, standards and practices
Preparedness Includes • Signage for evacuation routes • Providing decision-makers with tools to develop tsunami emergency response plans and procedures • TsunamiReady • Improving local (e.g., community-level) tsunami product reception and dissemination capabilities • Emergency Response and Recovery Planning at every level of Government • Public education, outreach, and awareness efforts
