  1. Heppner Jr/Sr High School Credit for Proficiency in the Classroom (C4P) Clearing Up the Target!

  2. The Target?

  3. Background • 7-12 Comprehensive School • 245 kids to 190 kids • 14.5 FTE • 97% White • 75% College Bound- 100% graduation rate • 40% Free and Reduced Lunches • Very Supportive Community

  4. Why? • Shrinking- need 8 period day • Pressure- get better • Staff/Contract- willing and able to change • Systematic approach to learning • One language • Grading fidelity • Flexibility

  5. Proficiency at HHS • Loose vs. Tight • Grading Policy • Training • Built while flying • Defined targets • Assessments/Rubrics • Sufficiency/Proficiency • Teaching vs. Learning

  6. Nuts and Bolts • Multiple Assessments- some color coded • Tutorial- contract time • Created Study Guides- no gotchas • Progress to semester • Directly assesses target/standard • Clear Correlation- practice and assessments • ABCI- advisory • 85% Threshold

  7. Nuts and Bolts Cont. • Numerous interventions • Formative assessment • Hybrid Block • Extension classes • Syllabi • Incompletes- communication • Eligibility

  8. Together We Believe • This is what we do- it is our #1 priority! • Power in the developed! • You practice until you can’t get it wrong! • The C4P system is for all kids to be able to demonstrate their skills in a measurable way. • Skills are directly assessed to meeting the Essential Skills component of the new graduation requirements and job/industry standards and requirements!

  9. We Believe Continued • C4P brings focus to the standards (targets) further than ever before by aligning our grading practices to individual standards (targets). • It is a way to challenge students in a new manner that has tangible results that can be measured with grades. • Easier way of monitoring student progress so interventions can be put in place earlier. • Students will be evaluated on success using performance/project assessments- and not sit and get lecture.

  10. HHS Good To Great • Cleared the Target- no surprises • Everything we do has a systems based approach • 4th year of implementation- no student fails • Assess the standard and not the activity • Learning is driven by rubrics and study guides • Focused instruction through differentiation, making outcomes more viable for all students- kind of an IEP for each student • Career Related Learning Standards- embedded 10% of grade

  11. Results? • Proficiency (system) and Sufficiency (craft/art) • Communication with parents and students (ongoing) • Building assessments/structure (finally) • Tracking students (unlike never before) • Interventions in place (not more of the same) • More upper level classes (5 AP and 10 Honors- Eastern Promise)

  12. Results Cont. • Improved Test Scores • System Fidelity (have consistency) • Professional Development (continued plan) • Teacher Leadership (our teachers are district leaders with academic achievement) • Change is nothing (bring on Common Core) • Teamwork/Collaboration (beyond belief) • Problem Solving (stretches staff)
