Growth Hormone (GH) Holly Farris
What Is It? • 191-amino acid, single chained polypeptide • Synthesized, stored, and secreted by somatotrophic cells • Anterior Pituitary gland
Function • Increased height in childhood and adolescents –most known effect • Increases mineralization of bones • Muscle mass • Stimulates growth of internal organs- excluding the brain • Immune system
Positive or Negative? • Negative • High blood levels of IGF-I leads to decreased secretion of GH • IGF-1 directly suppresses the somatotrophic cells
Hyper • Gigantism- excessive growth, usually in childhood • Most common • Pituitary Tumor - causes headaches, impair vision by pressure on the optic nerves
Hypo • In children: • Growth failure • Short stature • In adults: • Increase in fat mass • Decrease muscle mass, energy and quality of life
