  22. Cuban Missile Crisis (Oct. 1962) • U-2 plane revealed Soviet weapons in Cuba (90 miles from FL)—threat to U.S. • Many difficult scenarios—WWIII on the line • Knocking out missiles—too risky • Blockade “quarantine” instead • Soviet ships face to face with quarantine—turned around

Crisis (con’d) (Oct. 1962) • Krushchev sends emissary with a deal for JFK: • U.S. stays out of Cuba; U.S. needs to remove their missiles in Turkey  in return USSR will remove nukes from Cuba • Kennedy agrees—but not in public • WWIII averted • “Hot Line” created between JFK and Krushchev in case of future emergencies • One positive—Limited Test Ban Treaty of 1963—no above ground tests
