  2. WHY TAKE NOTES? • You need to be able to take notes to • Remember what was said and written in class and from your textbook • Helps you develop critical thinking skills • “GOOD” notes can help you prepare for test

  3. Textbook formats • Almost every textbook follows this format • An introduction to the chapter (in our case the field notes) • Key ideas / questions / concepts for the chapter • The textbook is then set-up in outline form. In our book the major heading is in BLACK BOLD type • Sub points are the written in GREEN type • Points within the sub points are in a BURNT ORANGE color • How would you make this into an outline? • I • A • i

Chapter Notes– Before you start reading • Title your paper with the Chapter number and main topic • In this case it should be Chapter 10 Development • Next turn to the Key Questions for the chapter and write them in your notes • Now turn to the last page of the chapter and take a mental note of all of the vocabulary used in the chapter. • Make a chart on your paper with 3 columns • 1) words I know • 2) words I think I know but need to see in context • 3) words I should look up

  5. Before you start reading • Next read the chapter summary at the end of the chapter • What does this tell you? • Read the Field Note • What is the title of the field note? • Summarize it in 3-4 sentences

Reading and outlining notes Write down the BOLDED title • How is development defined and measured • Wide variety of wealth around the world • Africa farmers growing root crops • South Korean Automobile production • Development can not be measured in $ alone • Can’ be measured solely on what is produced but on how and where it is produced as well • Development means “progress” • Technology • production • Social and Economic well-being of the people

Supplementary notes • On a separate piece of paper you should have titled • Chapter 10 supplementary notes • This should include the following • Vocabulary words from the chapter with a definition for each term • These are found in order in the reading in BLACK BOLD FACE TYPE • A listing of models and a corresponding drawing and description of each model as well as the page number you found the model • For example • ROSTOWS LADDER OF DEVELOPMENT (pg. 342) Five stages of ec0nomic development Traditional Preconditions to takeoff Takeoff Drive to maturity High Mass consumption
