The Cockabully.A New Zealand Native Fish by Jay Hughes-Ransley
Introduction Its maori name is "Toitoi" the scientific name is "grahamina nigripenne". It is part of the bully family, there are eight species of bullys in New Zealand.
Description There are 8 different species of bully in New Zealand. For example the Giant Bully which can grow up to 15cm, the Blue Gill Bully (pictured) and the Common Bully which is found in the stream next to Wellesley College. The Common Bully is approximately 5cm in length, its colour is camouflaged with the sand and rocks of its habitat. This helps the bully to hide from predators.
Adaptive features The cockabully adapts to its habitat by having a camoflauged body. It also is a nocturnal feeder, only coming out from cover to feed at night. Some cockabullies during their lifecyle will migrate from the ocean back to fresh water streams, while others have become land locked and are non-migratory.
