  1. Menu Conventions A check mark option is a toggle or “on-off” switch (like a light switch) that is either checked (turned on) or not checked (turned off).

  2. Menu Conventions A grayed-out option is not currently available. For example, a graphics program might display the Text Toolbar option in gray if there is no text in the graphic to work with.

  3. Menu Conventions A keyboard shortcut is a key or combination of keys that you can press to activate the menu option without actually opening the menu.

  4. Menu Conventions submenu A triangular arrow following an option indicates the existence of a submenu. When you point to a menu option that is followed by a triangular arrow, a submenu automatically appears.

  5. Menu Conventions dialog box An ellipsis (three dots) following an option indicates that you must provide additional specifications after you select that option. When you select an option that is followed by an ellipsis, a dialog box opens that allows you to enter specifications for how you want a task carried out.
