Ice age • Glaciers covered most of Canada and Alaska • 14000 to 30000 years ago. • Ocean levels dropped to the bottom of the Bering Strait and it became a dry landmass called Beringia. • Early Asian peoples crossed this land bridge to get to the Americas.
First Americans • Hunter-Gathers • People who survive by searching for wild plants and animals to eat • Arrived over time, following large game herds • Mammoths, buffalo • Ice Age ends 10000 years ago, glaciers melt and Beringia disappears
How do we know this? • Archaeologists: study and learn about past cultures from artifacts (clues) that they findExamples are • Pictographs: pictures, drawn/painted, on cave walls • Petroglyphs: carvings made in the rock
