    3. Paleo-Indian Period Began about 12,000 years ago Used flint tipped spears to hunt mammoths, mastodons, and giant buffalo Theories about extinction of large animals 1. humans hunted them to extinction 2. environmental changes occurred as the ice caps melted 3. disease killed them off

    4. Archaic Period Began about 6,000 years ago People began hunting smaller animals They developed better weapons such as a notched stick called the atlatl They began taming dogs for helping with hauling and other tasks

    5. Late Prehistoric Period Began about 1500 years ago People began living in villages They began planting crops They began using the bow and arrow to successfully hunt larger animals such as buffalo and many small animals

    9. Group Activity Your group must find information about at least 2 Indian tribes from the assigned Native American Region. The six regions are: 1. Native Texans of the Gulf Coast 2. Native Texans of East Texas 3. Native Texans of the Plains 4. Native Texans of North Central Texas 5. Native Texans of Far West 6. Latecomers to Texas

    10. Requirements for Group Presentations/Poster Your project must include: Where the tribe lived (visual) How did the tribe get their food and what types of food? In what types of homes do they live? Facts about the tribe including lifestyles, specialized weapons, pottery, trade, or anything special about their tribe. What type of government did they have? 6. Did they modify their environment?

    11. Dilemma You are a Spaniard during the 1600s. You have traveled to the new world as a missionary to Christianize the natives and have decided to settle in the land we now know as Texas. You have found a perfect site but it is inhabited by natives who seem reluctant to accept your presence. What do you do?

    12. Consider the following points for your first paragraph Who are you? (age, gender, occupation) Tell us about your family, where you are from and what you chose to bring with you to this new land. What did you leave behind? Describe your food, clothing, housing, religion, and government.

    13. Second Paragraph Explain the historical facts you have researched to write your paper. The following film clip will show some of the Spanish influence on the life of Native Texans.

    15. Third Paragraph Consider the information you have researched on the dilemma and come to a conclusion about what you will do. Explain how your decision will affect the natives and the Spaniards now and in the future.
