  2. What is imagery? • Imagery is based on the five senses • Sight • Hearing • Taste • Touch • Smell

  3. How do authors use imagery? • To paint a picture for the reader • To provide meaning in a story or poem • To make the story come alive for the reader

  4. Imagery Vocabulary • Sensory language • Metaphor • Simile • Personification • Onomatopoeia

  5. Sensory Language • Appeals to the 5 senses • Examples: • Taste - Yummy • Sight - Beautiful • Touch - Rough • Smell - Sweet • Hearing - Loud

  6. Metaphor • A comparison made by saying that one thing is something else. • Example: • The tree’s bright red and orange leaves were a fire in the sky

  7. Simile • A comparison using like or as • Example: • The leaves danced on the wind like birds in flight.

  9. Personification • Human characteristics applied to non-human objects • Example: • The leaves danced on the wind.

  10. Onomatopoeia • Words that represent sounds. • Examples: • Bang! • Pop! • Whiz!

  11. Why should I use imagery? • So my writing won’t be “boring.” • So my reader understands my experience. • So that my reader is drawn in to my story.
