Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year in 5th grade! I’m Mrs. Maggio, with a degree in Finance and years of teaching experience. Here, we will focus on timely attendance, organization, and good behavior with various expectations for homework in Math, Spelling, and Reading. Our curriculum includes Everyday Math, Accelerated Reader, Writing Alive, and IB units of inquiry covering topics like Weather, Explorers, and Economics. Throughout the year, students will participate in exciting events and will learn valuable skills to prepare them for 6th grade!

  1. Back-to-School2012-2013 Welcome to 5th Grade!!!

Mrs. Maggio • Degree in Finance – University of Nebraska • Worked at Hallmark Cards for 10 years • 2 children (5th and 3rd at Bradley) • Teaching License from Metro State in 2010 • Currently half way through Masters at Regis • Long-term sub in LMC, classroom sub, IB Coordinator • Now – 5th Grade!!!

  3. Expectations - Timing • Arrive on time • 8:30 breakfast • 8:40 supervision on playground • 8:50 bell rings, teachers pick up students • 8:55 attendance • 9:00 ready to work

  4. Expectations – Misc. • Organization • Planners – parents sign daily • Independent Reading (Goal 45 minutes) • Homework due Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings • Good Behavior • 5th grade reading list

Expectations - Homework • Homework • Monday – Thursday • Math – 10 to 20 minutes • Spelling - 10-20 minutes • Reading – 45 minutes each night (goal) • HOMEWORK IS PRACTICE! • Math – if your child is struggling and unable to complete independently, please make a note and I will follow-up • Spelling – Mon-Wed, Spellers Choice Thurs. Practice Test (signed by parent) • Reading – 5th grade book list, Accelerated Reader • Occasional writing assignments and projects

  6. Behavior PolicyGreen Card Club Green= verbal warning Yellow= last warning Red= Timeout, note home Purple = Refocus form sent home Three Refocus forms = an office referral. Other ways to motivate students • Praise • Team points • Super Citizen/lunch with the principal • Drawing for treasure box

What We Will Be Learning In 5th Grade • Math – Everyday Math, Mental Math, Automaticity • Family Letter: goes home at the beginning of each new unit (answers) • Reading – Reading Groups, Accelerated Reader • Writing – Writing Alive • Language Arts – Daily Sentence Styling, Daily Language Instruction, Spelling • Science and Social Studies – IB Units of Inquiry
