  1. WIAA BASKETBALL SESSION WHY DO I COACH?

  2. Books to Read Before Next Season The Politics of Coaching By Carl J. Pierson

  3. WHY DO YOU COACH? • Spend a couple of moments reflecting then list the reasons why you coach. • Spend a few moments sharing your list with someone close to you that you don’t know after you introduce yourself.

  4. WHY DO I COACH? • It has nothing to do with winning and losing. • It has nothing to do with championships or trophies, or players that go to the next level. • I coach to help boys become Men of Empathy and Integrity who will lead, be responsible, and change the world for good.

  5. Our Core Values • Empathy- “feeling into another”, to understand another persons thoughts, feelings, and desires. The building block of all successful relationships. • Kindness- covers a vast range of words and actions. The ten most important words- one-”please”, two- “thank you”, three- “I love you”, four- “Can I help you?” • Hard Work- sign your work with your very best effort. • Service- helping others above oneself; teammates, school, community. Empathy and Kindness in action.

  6. Defining Success • Success is not a one-dimensional tug-of-war between winning and losing. Setbacks, losses, and mistakes help to build success. • I like John Wooden’s definition: “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.”

  7. Our Measure of Success • May take 20 years to measure the full scope of our impact. • Success will be defined and measured by the content of their character, their leadership, and their contribution to the betterment of their families, their communities, and the world. Illustrated by their roles as committed husbands, devoted fathers, partners, friends, empathic men of integrity.

  8. Our Service • Establish a K-12 system of basketball development in partnership with Parks and Rec and AAU established Programs to improve skills. • Winter and Summer Basketball Camps for elementary youth focused on skill development. • Coaching Clinics for Youth Coaches • Skill Clinics for Youth Teams-Our players as Coaches, Officials, Role Models. • Summer Development of high school players.
