  2. Due Today: Nothing Monday, October 24, 2011 • Walk-In: Pick up a white binder off of the shelf and turn to the last essay in the binder. Please put the divider in that is on your desk and put the first “This I Believe” Essay behind the divider that we are going to explore today. • Learning Objective: • Students will notice characteristics of a particular genre based on idea development, organization, craft and style, and conventions. • Based on noticeings students will form a conclusion or hypothesis about the purpose behind different techniques. • Agenda: • This I Believe Immersion Mentor Text # 1 Homework:

This I Believe Immersion: Mentor Text 1 Before we begin, share you core beliefs with your group and the possible belief that you may want to write about. • While reading record what you notice around the organizing concepts. • If you already recorded noticeings about this essay you must find new things to notice.

  4. This I Believe Synthesis/Hypothesis • Reflect back to your exploration on Friday. What similarities or trends are you starting to see among the This I Believe Genre? • Why are these trends present? What purpose do these techniques serve that may be necessary to the genre? • What differences or unique characteristics have you seen? What purpose do these unique traits serve? Why does the writer deviate from the similarity or trend?

Please turn to the second “This I Believe” Essay that we are going to explore today. • Learning Objective: • Students will notice characteristics of a particular genre based on idea development, organization, craft and style, and conventions. • Based on noticeings students will form a conclusion or hypothesis about the purpose behind different techniques. • Agenda: • This I Believe Immersion Mentor Text # 2 Homework:Go to www.thisibelieve.com and read three more Mentor Texts and record noticienings by next Tuesday

  9. Quick Writes • Respond to at least three of the following quick writes. • Most of us have been in a situation where we made a promise that for one reason or another we were unable to keep. When were you disappointed because someone made you a promise that they failed to keep? Or when did you break a promise that you made to someone else? • We all tend to judge people by their appearances, even though looks can be deceiving. Have you ever prejudged someone incorrectly based on their appearance or hassomeone ever prejudged you unfairly based on how you look? • All of us are works in progress with a long wayto go before we reach our full potential. In what skill or area are you still working to make progress? • Everyone has problems or challenges to overcome. What obstacles are you proud to have faced and conquered? • Our society uses the word hero in many different ways? How do you define hero, and who is a hero in your life? What values do they possess? • There is a famous adage: "To err is human, to forgive divine.” When did you feel divine because you were able to forgive someone for their mistake? When did someone act divine by forgiving you when you were wrong?

  10. This I Believe Group Exploration • Read the following This I Believe essays, from www.thisibelieve.org ,written by the following “famous” people. You do not need to record noticeings yet. For each essay, simply rate it out of 5 and briefly explain why. • Amy Tan Saying Thanks to My Ghosts • Eleanor Roosevelt Growth that Starts from Thinking • Muhammad Ali I am Still the Greatest • Bill Gates Unleashing the Power of Creativity and Intelligence • Tony Hawk Do What You Love • Helen Keller The Light of a Brighter Day • Gloria Steinem A Balance Between Nature and Nurture

This I Believe Group Exploration • With your group, choose ONE of the This I Believe Essays from the “famous” collection that you would like to record detailed noticeings about. • Be democratic when deciding which essay to explore. • Reread the essay and then share and record as many noticeings as you can by having each person notice one thing about the organizing concept in the left hand column. Rotate around your group until someone cannot add anything else to your list.

  12. Position Discussion • On you half sheet of paper, read the following statements, and write A for agree and D for disagree. • Go with your heart, with your values and beliefs.
