Processing library books can be a tedious, time consuming, and labor intensive procedure. In an effort to save time, we have been contracting processing and cataloging services through our book vendors; but, some steps still need to be completed by library personnel.
Steps for processing materials. Inspection :The material should be examined for any physical defects such as (e.g. damaged covers or folded/torn pages). If a book or other item purchased by the library is defective, it can usually bereturned. However, sometimes it will not be accepted for return by the vendorif it has beenproperty stamped. When ordering school library stamp, please include your school name and the district, Mission CISD. Identification : Most libraries label their materials with some form of permanent identification that gives the name of the library and its address. Identification is done to discourage theft and to ensure that lost library materials are returned to the library from which they originated. At MCISD, each campus library should have property stamps with this information. 1.Books are stamped inside the front cover2. The center of the verso/title page3. The inside of the back cover.
Downloading Marc Records from Vendor (Follett/BTSB/Etc.) • 1. Create a Microliffolder on your Desktop • 2. Create a Resource List on Destiny (Optional) • a. My Info Tab/Resource Lists • b. Add a List (Name and Description) • Ex. New Books, New Videos, Etc. • 3. Import Title (From Vendor) • a. Catalog Tab/Import Titles • b. Title Matching – Strict • c. Incoming title matches - Replace • d. Copy Matching - Skip • 4. Assign Copy Information • a. Click: Update • b. Circulation type • c. Copy Categories • 1. Sub-location • 2.Vendor • 3. Funding Source • 5. Import File – Browse to find it • a. Add titles to a List (Select List) • b. Limit the job summary (if you want to see errors) • c. Preview or Import • 6. Back Office Tab /Job Manager
Barcodes : MCISD uses Code 39 barcode symbology with 8 digits and no check digits. The first 3 digits are the school identification number and the last five digits are unique to each particular item. Recommendation for Barcode Range Books : 10700000 – 10759999 Videos : 10760000 – 10769999 Temporary items : 10770000 – 10779999 Equipment : 10780000 - 10789999
