Great Scientists Std. 7.10.2 I can match great scientists with their theories and inventions. I can discuss the significance of those theories and inventions.
It started with Columbus . . . • Columbus used a map made by Ptolemy to reach Asia by traveling west. • His “discovery” of North America showed that the Greek scholar’s maps were wrong. • Soon other Europeans began to test and disprove long-held Greek theories through scientific observation.
Nicolaus Copernicus • Previous thinking: Ptolemy wrote that the earth was the center of the universe and the sun and other planets orbited the earth. For 1400 years, this was the belief. • Copernicus’s observations led him to believe that the earth and other planets orbited the sun. • He published a book called, On the Revolution of the Celestial Spheres, in 1543. • His theories came to be called the “Copernican System”.
Tycho Brahe • Previous thinking: Scientists believed that the stars were perfect, unchanging and fixed in place. • Brahe charted the location of more than 750 stars. He also developed instruments for tracking the movements of stars. • He founded a famous observatory called, Uraniborg.
Johannes Kepler • Previous thinking: Copernicus taught that planets orbited the sun in circles. • Kepler’s observations of the planet Mars led him to believe that the planets’ orbits were elliptical (oval). He also found that planets move faster when they are closer to the sun. • He wrote a book called Harmonia Mundi.
Sir Isaac Newton • Previous thinking: Most people believed light was white. • Newton discovered that light is made up of all the colors of the rainbow. • Newton studied in many other areas and made many significant contributions. His theories have been proven so many times they are now called laws. • Law of Gravity • Laws of Motion • He invented the reflecting telescope. • He is the inventor of calculus. In 1687, he published Principia Mathematica.
New Inventions • Microscope - Invented by Zacharias Janssen in 1590 • Thermometer – Invented by Galileo Galilei in 1593 • Telescope – Invented by Dutch lens maker in 1608, improved by Galileo Galilei • Barometer – Invented by Evangelista Torricelli
