Using the corresponding numbers, arrange the skills in the order of what you think employers rate as the most important skills an employee must have. You can discuss your choices with others.

Transferable Skills • Definition of Transferable Skills • Skills useful in any job: a skill that is not limited to a specific academic discipline, area of knowledge, job, or task and is useful in any work situation, e.g. communication or organizational skills • Importance of Transferable Skills • Increases your skillset • Opens opportunities within a team or organization • Makes you more valuable to the organization • Builds your self-confidence • Companies hire skill sets, not job titles. • Skills are transferable and it is up to you to define your skills in relation to the company’s needs. Look at what you do well, not what your job title is.

Communication Skills • Communications Skills (listening, verbal, written). • Being a clear, concise and effective communicator is critical in the workplace. • Having the ability to listen, write, speak effectively and facilitate communicationis absolutely critical in whatever profession you are engaged in. • If you can communicate well – and showcase this skill – you are perceived as a competent and strong employee.

Project Management Skills • Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling resources to achieve specific goals. • It is the ability to complete a project within an allotted timeframe. • It involves goal-setting. • Employers seek a results-driven achiever with a strong sense of detail orientation and time management.

Interpersonal Skills • Interpersonal Skills • Interaction with other people inside and outside of the organization in order to accomplish a job. • This can be measured by how you handle yourself in stressful situations, how you treat people and what your level of emotional intelligence is. It is crucial that you possess the ability to relate to your coworkers, inspire others and minimize conflict. • Teamwork Effectiveness • Work confidently within a group and let your voice be heard. • Maintain effective communication and a cohesive bond between your coworkers. • Many opportunities involve working in a group setting and you must have the ability to work well with others while maintaining your professionalism.

Self Assessment • Purpose • It gives you a better idea of what you want in a job/career. • It allows you to identify your strengths and areas of improvement. • Types of Self Assessments • Simple—you and a paper and pencil • General—book or on-line assessments; use several resources • Scientific—assessments based on research • More accurate insights • Can be expensive • Take several hours to complete

Review and Revise Your Goals • Review your performance management goals • Performance Management Goals • Do your performance goals reflect your transferable skills capability? • Does your development plan reflect ways to develop additional transferable skills or improve current transferable skills?

Self Development Review • Know what you want in a job/career. • Do an honest self-assessment • Review the job skill requirements for the position you want • Determine your skills • Complete a skills inventory and skills assessment • Identify your skill strengths and list skills that need to be developed or improved • Communicate your objective • Write SMART goals to help you achieve your objectives • Discuss your objective(s) with your supervisor, mentor, or someone who will give you good feedback • Create a Development Plan • Locate and identify resources that can help you build your skills • Act upon the plan
