The Maths Debate South African Extraordinary Schools Coalition (SAESC) Tuesday, 21 February 2017 Inanda Seminary
Introduction- National Status of Maths Only 34% of our Grade 9 learners can do basic mathematics 66% of our learners cannot do basic computations or match tables to bar graphs or read a simple line graph A recent study showed that only about 15,000 matrics achieved 70% or more in mathematics. That’s about 1,5% of students who start school in Grade 1 Only one in three learners who wrote Mathematics in 2016 got 40% or more in the subject Source: NicSpaull- Mail and Guardian 27 January 2017
The LEAP Maths Journey John and Zonke’s experience of Jo Boaler All learners can do Maths We learn from our mistakes- growth mindset The emphasis is not on the outcomes, but on the process Multiple Intelligences- I learn through seeing, feeling, hearing, touching, etc. Outcomes are teacher orientated, Process is learner orientated
LEAP starting to explore the Jo Boaler approach November 2016 the Maths teachers were exposed to the Jo Baoler approach during their planning session Over the weekend the Instructional Leader Team started to explore the approach In future we want to take the approach to other subjects A short introduction to Jo Boaler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3icoSeGqQtY
