  2. Why are there joints in my body? If you didn’t have them, you couldn’t move. You’d be more stiff than the tin man!

  3. What is a joint? • A joint is where two bones meet. • The bones are connected to each other by tendons

  4. There are many kinds of joints • Sliding Joints • Ball-and-Socket Joints • Pivot Joints • Hinge Joints • Fixed Joints Here are some of them:

  5. Sliding Joints • Sliding joints allow a small amount of movement. • The bones of your backbone are connected at sliding joints. • They have cartilage between them, which allows the backbone to twist and bend.

  6. Ball-And-Socket Joints • Ball-and-socket joints allow the most movement. • Your leg and arm can move in many directions because a ball-and-socket joint connects them.

  7. Pivot Joints • The pivot joint allows movement from side to side. • A hole in one bone fits over a pointed part in the other. • Turn your head from side to side. Your skull is attached to the backbone by a pivot joint.

  8. Hinge Joint • The hinge joint allows bones to move back and forth, but only in one direction. • Your elbow is a hinge joint. So is your knee.

  9. Fixed Joints • Some bones are permanently connected, or fused. • You have fixed joints in your skull.
