  1. CHAPTER 19 Image-Recording Devices

  2. FILM CHARACTERISTICS • Film is constructed by coating a polyester base with an emulsion layer, the active component. The emulsion consists of a large number of small silver halide grains suspended in a gelatin matrix. • Absorption of light photons causes electrons to be released and moved through the silver halide crystal.

  3. Cont. • The amount of darkening is quantified by the optical density. • The relationship between optical density and percentage of light transmitted is shown in below table.

  4. Cont. • Film is characterized by a plot of optical density versus exposure.

  5. Film Processing • An automatic processor performs the chemical operations necessary to transform the latent image into a visual pattern of shades of gray. • For 90-second processing, the time for each step is partitioned as follows:

  6. MULTIFORMAT CAMERA • One or more images are recorded on a single sheet of transparency film.

  7. LASER CAMERA • A laser replaces the CRT as the light source in the laser camera. • The intensity and size of the laser beam are precisely controlled.

  8. Quality Control • Several test patterns are available for imaging to evaluate uniformity, pixel registration, and gray-scale reproducibility.

  9. Advantages and Disadvantages • The laser camera provides a fast and highly reliable method of recording hard copy images on film. It can accommodate different size, and the image format can br varied. • The expense of a laser camera dedicated to ultrasound.

  10. GRAY-SCALE MAPPING • Gray-scale maps assume different functional shapes to highlight certain informational content in the image.

  11. Transparency Film With Dry Processing • In the past few years high-quality hard copy image recording without wet chemistry has been introduced.

  12. Video Printer • The video printer provides a black and white hard copy recording of an image displayed on the monitor.

  13. COLOR VIDEO PRINTER • A color image on paper is viewed by sensing the reflected light from colored dyes distributed across the papersurface.

  14. MAGNETIC TAPE RECORDING • Recording a series of images for subsequent playback in real time is often accomplished with magnetic tape recording.
