POLITICAL MACHINES • Unofficial city organizations designed to keep a particular party or group in power • Usually headed by a “Boss” – sometimes in an elected office but more often worked behind the scenes to handpick those who run for office and help them win in exchange for political favors

  2. How Political Machines Work: • Use GRAFT to win city contracts for needed services like trash, public utilities • Use contracts to provide jobs and favors to city residents • City residents repay Boss and Machine by electing the “appropriate” officials “JOBS for VOTES”

  3. Why did it work? • Poor city residents needed jobs • New Immigrants were eager to please to stay in America • Machines provided aid and services that government and charities could not
