  7. MSDS • All substances coming on site must have a MSDS • MSDS goes Safety Dept. • Must be in 16-part, EC format • Show overhead of MSDS • Post at area of work

  8. Container Labelling • All containers must be labelled • Label must show content and associated hazards • Secondary containers must be labelled as per • original • Container must be suitable for proposed contents • (i.e. spark arrestor on metal petrol cans)

Chemicals / SubstancesHazards - Risk Assessment • Any substance with a hazard warning label has potential to cause harm - assess risk before using it • Management must carry out a risk assessment to find out whether • exposure to a substance can be eliminated • alternative work methods can reduce exposure • a less hazardous substance can be used

Chemical Hazards • Examples of hazardous substance on construction sites • Solvents, cement, resins, paints • All flammable materials must be reported to Area Owner prior to entering building • How you could be affected by a hazardous substance • Ingestion - eating contaminated foods • Inhalation - breathing harmful dust or fumes • Absorption - chemicals entering through cuts

Control Measures • When using hazardous substances, wear correct PPE • Know how to look after and use PPE correctly • Know where washing and first aid facilities are on site • Ensure hazardous substances are put back into a secure location after use and not left out on site • Don’t store hazardous substance above head height

  12. Use of Substances • Make sure you are trained to use hazardous substances • Read and comply with information on the MSDS forms • MSDS must be reported in area of use • Don’t eat, drink, or smoke when handling substances • Don’t expose workers to fumes, dust, or gases • Always wash at the end of each shift and before eating

  13. Disposal • Disposal must be in accordance with MSDS • All waste disposal via ????? • Waste must be in identifiable bags • (i.e. corrosive solvents) • Minimum requirements - double bag - may • need strong chemical bins

  22. Lockout The placement of a lockout device on an energy isolation device. This ensures that the energy isolating device and the systems it controls cannot be accidentally operated Tagout The placement of a tagout device on an energy isolation device to indicate that the isolation device and the system being controlled may not be operated until the tagout device is removed Lockout - Tagout

Any equipment able to store hazardous energy must have lockout and tagout capability Only trained and authorised persons can perform lockout - tagout (Supervisors and Project Coordinators) A lockout - tagout device cannot be removed on behalf of another person, unless an approved transfer procedure has taken place General Requirements

  25. Tagout alone is permitted only in circumstances where a lockout device cannot be used Seek approval from your supervisor before commencing any work on equipment that cannot be locked out Authorised persons only may remove tag Tagout

A tag may only be removed by the authorized person who attached it A tag must never be bypassed, ignored or defeated A tag must be able to withstand the environmental conditions A tag must be securely attached so it is not inadvertently defeated A tag must only be transferred when ownership has to be changed for a task The new authorised person must affix his tag with all relevant details and ensure the work permit shows the same details Tagout Requirements

Fire Extinguishers • Water - (red label) use on paper, wood, and solid flammable • CO2 - (black label) use on liquids, gases and electrical fires • Foam - (cream label) use on flammable liquids • Powder - (blue label) use on all types of fire but primarily fires involving metals, such as aluminum and magnesium • Multi-purpose powder - (no label) use for as for water, CO2, foam, extinguisher
