About The Henry Doorly Zoo • Established in 1894 as Riverside Park, and had two bison, deer, and grizzly bear on display. • Renamed to the Henry Doorly Zoo in 1963 after a $750,000 donation by Margaret Doorly in remembrance of her late husband. • Currently covers 130 woodland acres, and includes 15 major animal habitats with more than 24,330 animals representing 972 species. This includes 44 endangered species and 7 threatened species.

  3. Goals of the Zoo • Provide recreational activities and entertainment for the young and old. • Focus on conservation and research for species all over the world. • Educate the public as well as high school, undergraduate, and grad students with a variety of classes and intern positions.

  4. Interning at the Zoo • Intern positions available year-around with Spring, Summer I and II, Fall and Winter sessions. • A large variety of positions around the zoo such as the aquarium, hoofstock, desert mammals or reptiles, jungle, horticulture, nutrition, information technology, graphic arts, wildlife safari park, and many more.

  5. My Internship • Interned during the Fall session from September through December • Spent about 5 weeks with the Hoofstock crew, the Desert Dome and Kingdoms of the Night mammal crews, and the Jungle crew.

Benefits While Interning at the Zoo • Nonpaying internship, but flexible schedules available if you want to get a part-time job. • Free housing in a zoo owned house located next to the zoo with an agreement of working at least 20 hours per week. • Free access to the zoo exhibits on any day. • Discounts on Imax Theater presentations, food, and gift shops in the zoo.

  8. Initial Expectations of the Internship • Learn about the behavior, diet, and care of a huge variety of animals. • Learn how a zoo works and experience a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at how zoo animals are cared for. • Interact with animals most people only see on TV.

  9. Job Description: Hoofstock Crew • Clean the giraffe, okapi, cheetah, and guar barns • Prepare animal diets and assist keepers with feeding. • Observe veterinarian work on animals and semen collection from guars. • Animals worked with: giraffes, zebra, sable antelope, bongos, okapis, bearded pigs, warthogs, guar, cheetahs, wallabies, squirrel and spider monkeys, dama gazelles, and scimitar-horned orks.

  10. Job Description: Desert Dome and Kingdoms of the Night Mammal Crews • Clean animal displays before the public arrives and clean back holdings where animals are kept overnight. • Prepare diets to be feed in the morning and afternoon. • Assist keepers with general maintenance of animal displays. • Animals worked with: bats, sugar gliders, bobcats, mountain lions, fossa, aardvarks, foxes, bush babies, and many others.

  11. Job Description: Jungle Crew • Clean animal displays and back holdings. • Assist with maintenance of the jungle trail and animal displays. • Assist with enrichment activities for animals. • Prepare diets and feed animals. • Animal worked with: otters, lemurs, monkeys, tapiers, pygmy hippos, snakes, gibbons, and many others.

  12. Learning Outcomes • Learned about conservation projects the zoo is currently working on and different breeding programs they have. • The procedures for interacting and caring for wild animals. • Learned a lot about animal diets • Found out that zookeeping is something I want to do when I graduate!
