Amendment vs Standard • Opinions voiced that continued amending of 802.11 is becoming unmanageable especially with a major modification • There was discussion suggesting that significant changes to the 802.11 lower MAC may be required for 60 GHz • January 2008 strawpoll: for 57-62GHz, amendment or new standard: • Amendment: 11 • New standard: 29 • We need to maintain and enhance the 802.11 ecosystem • Reuse and maintain backward compatibility to 802.11 management plane • E.g. association, authentication, security, measurement, MIB Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

Coexistence with 802.15.3c • Text from 802.15.3c PAR, additional explanatory notes “It is in the best interest of users and the industry to strive for a level of coexistence with other wireless systems, especially those in similar market spaces. Modified 5.2 Scope • The scope of this project is to define a new standard in 802.11 for a Physical Layer (PHY) and Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) to enable operation in the 60 GHz frequency band (typically 57-66 GHz) which will be capable of very high throughput. The MAC and PHY specified in this standard: • Enable a maximum throughput of at least 1 Gbps, as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) • Retain the 802.11 fundamentals including network architecture (e.g. BSS, ESS) • Maintain interoperability with the 802.11 management plane (e.g. association, authentication, security, roaming, network measurement and management, MIB) • Enable fast session transfer between 60 GHz and 2.4/5 GHz bands • Address coexistence with other systems in the band • Scope from 08/223r1 • The scope of this project is to define an amendment that will standardize modifications to both the 802.11 physical layers (PHY) and the 802.11 Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) to enable operation in the 60 GHz frequency band (typically 57-66 GHz) which will be capable of very high throughput, with a maximum throughput of at least 1Gbps, as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP). Modified 5.4 Purpose • The purpose of the project is to improve the 802.11 wireless local area network (LAN) user experience by providing significantly higher throughput for data networking. • Purpose from 08/223r1 • The purpose of the project is to improve the 802.11 wireless local area network (LAN) user experience by providing significantly higher throughput for current applications and to enable new applications and market segments.   14. New 5.5 Need for Project • As WLAN usage grows, there exists an increasing need for additional capacity. Additional high bandwidth channels are needed for efficient support of high throughput usage. • Mainstream wired LAN products have shifted to Gigabit per second speeds. However, this does not imply that devices must be multi-band.   16. Modified 17.5.2 Compatibility • Compatibility with IEEE 802 requirements will result from keeping the MAC SAP interface the same as for the existing 802.11 standard. The proposed standard shall introduce no 802.1 architectural changes. The MAC SAP definition shall not be altered, ensuring that all LLC and MAC interfaces are compatible to and in conformance with the IEEE 802.1 Architecture, Management and Internetworking standards.
