  2. Remember... • What event brings the U.S. into this war? • The U.S. brings fresh troops to the fight • Who is the only allied country left standing when the U.S. enters?

  3. U.S. Joins the Allies • Britain was struggling throughout Europe and North Africa to hold back German advances • Many believed that the Germans could not be stopped • Allies begin by winning back the waters in the Atlantic by halting U-boat attacks

  4. Winning north Africa Step 1:

  5. Control North Africa 1. In 1941 Germany was pushing deep into British controlled Egypt. 2. By 1942 U.S. helps British push back German offensive

  6. Reclaiming North Africa 3. Hitler’s instructions were to fight to the death • 240,000 German & Italians surrendered 4. Allied forces protect Egypt and begin to control North Africa by 1943

  7. Casablanca Conference • Churchill and Roosevelt Meet in Morocco • Agree to deal with Europe first • Will only accept unconditional surrender

  10. Moving in on Italy • Allied forces move north into Italy • Mussolini is removed from office in 1943 • Germans rescue him and he is moved to the north

  11. Taking Italy • Fighting will continue until April of 1945 • The allies finally capture Rome and break through the German lines • Mussolini is shot and killed as he tried to cross the Italian border

  15. Soviets push back and regain lost land by 1943 It’s Cold... Germans run out of supplies & can’t escape the Winter

  18. D-Day... • D-Day- June 6th 1944 • The Allied invasion along the French coastline • Hitler does little to stop the effort by the Allies as he feared another attack

  20. Taking Back France • General Patton uses a blitzkrieg to open a hole in German defenses in France • Begins the liberating of France and continues the Allied push to Germany Liberated in August of 1944

  21. Hitler’s Last Stand • The Battle of the Bulge: Winter 1944 • Hitler getting desperate • The Germans give one more huge push in between Luxembourg and Belgium (Bulge)

  22. Battle of Bulge Outcome • Largest battle ever fought by U.S. army • U.S. pushes Germans back one more time • Germans lose over 100,000 in battle • Nazi leaders realize that the war is lost

  23. The War Ends in Europe • Soviet Forces take Berlin in April 1945 • Hitler commits suicide on April 30, 1945 • German troops surrender on May 8th, 1945 • The war is over in Europe • What is still left for the Allies win?
