  2. How Budget Cuts Impact Elementary Schools • Fewer resources (Ex. Less textbooks) • After school programs are cut -This is a problem for parents who work and it doesn’t allow the children to get involved • Busing being cut • Teachers cut, regardless of how effective they are • Technology being cut -This is a problem in today’s society since everything has become so technological • Librarians taken away • Nurses cut -This one is a major issue because kids are often sick and there needs to be someone who can diagnose or care for them while at school

How Budget Cuts Affect Middle Schools • Some, if not all, sports are being cut -This doesn’t allow the kids to stay active and it also takes away something that a lot of them work hard to do • Fewer resources • Loss of teachers and staff • Programs as a whole are cut • No foreign languages offered • Students being put behind • Tutoring lost • Transportation taken away • Technology cuts • Nurses cut

  4. How Budget Cuts Affect High Schools • Class sizes increasing • Fewer resources • Bus services removed -Some high school students aren’t old enough to drive however, and some don’t have cars. This puts students in a difficult situation. • Teachers are losing jobs • Electives cut -This means that students aren’t getting to choose the types of classes that interest them • Sports cut • Teachers have less individual time with students

High School Effects Continued • Choir, family classes, wood shop, and home economics removed • Education quality is lowered • Foreign languages, art, and physical education cut • Lack of counselors -This negatively affects students that are in need of advice or help from others who are qualified • Summer school cut -Students are no longer able to re-take classes to get caught up or to move ahead during the summertime • Technology cut • Nurses cut

How Budget Cuts Affect Universities • Graduate programs are being cut • There is a rise in student fees • Faculty are taking furlough days • Students in need of financial aid • Some colleges are accepting NO new admission applications (undergraduate, post-grad, or graduate) • Students are forced to take quarters or semesters off • Students are in need of more loans -However, these are also harder to get at times like these • Cutbacks on federal pell grants • Loss of technology

How Will Budget Cuts Impact Me As A Teacher? • Less pay • Lack of jobs -This will greatly affect our LC since we are all working to become teachers • Less spent on employee benefits • Fewer professional development opportunities • Less money provided for materials • Delays for new textbooks • Larger class sizes • Teachers being moved or laid-off • Entire school closures • More responsibilities • Less preparation time

A: The buses were cut two years for high school students only, and teachers salaries were cut; some were even laid off Q: Did you ever become part of a teachers’ union? A: Yes. If you’re not part of one, you’re an easy target.

  9. What The Survey Says • I sent out a survey to hundreds of people. I gathered the first 100 responses to each of the questions to come up with myfindings. • Of the people who responded, 73 were female and 27 were male.

Question 4 of Survey What do you think can be done to improve budget cuts? • Increase Funding From State Government • Instead of cutting jobs or programs, the infrastructure of education needs reevaluated. • Educate the community on the long term effects of budget cuts. What happens to a student's education if certain things are taken away? • Get parents to vote for levees. • A reform of the education system. • Have Free Interns. • Pay teachers what they deserve. If teachers could focus on teaching rather than passing state requirements, the students would be better off. • Minimize spending in unnecessary areas

  14. Others Suggestions To Improve Cuts 9. Decrease Teacher Salaries 10. Collect more student fees from families 11. Use the money that schools get more wisely 12. Disperse limited resources in a better way 13. Work toward a better economy; Until it is improved, people will continue to vote no because they cannot afford extra tax 14. Raise awareness that doesn't come off as campaigning- something that appeals to college age voters 15. Manage funds better 16. Hire younger teachers who cost less than older teachers 17. Fire ineffective teachers 18. Consolidate departments

Take a poll to see which area people would rather have the cuts come from 20.The national government should provide a budget for schools, rather than relying on tax payers 21. More fundraisers 22. Vote for governors who care a lot about education 23. Look for outside sources of funding 24. Have students partner with faculty and local companies to brainstorm solutions 25. Awareness outreach in communities 26. Cut other things in society, rather than education 27. Build sense of community

If yes, how? • Loss of teachers, art programs, music classes, and AP classes (Napoleon, OH) • Taxes being raised to increase budgets (Oakwood, OH) • Loss of busing and extracurriculars (Norwood, OH) • Athletic programs cut (Sylvania, OH) • Teacher aids are getting let go and benefits are being cut for part time workers (Miamisburg, OH) • Raising Tuition at UC (Cincinnati, OH) • Fees required to play sports (West Liberty, OH) • High school bus services cut, and school start times changed (Fairfield, OH) • Busing cut, funding for band and other extracurriculars cut (Milford, OH) • 27 teachers cut, bus services to high school students cut, classes cut, and bigger class sizes (Harrison, OH)

How Is Your District Affected? 11.Poverty in area so taxes can’t be raised, therefore no new schools (Ironton, OH) 12. 210 teachers cut and more cuts coming in Lakota schools (West Chester, OH) 13. Sports and other extracurricular activities cut and art department funding is lessened (Columbus, OH) 14. Arts affected, teachers salaries cut, and an inability to effectively educate the students (Winton Woods, OH) 15. Loss of jobs in Cincinnati Public Schools (Cincinnati, OH) 16. Taxes being raised, Little Miami bus services cut, Princeton cut 100 positions, and other schools cutting arts and languages (Loveland, OH) 17. Some schools closed down, and others rumored to be, and teacher salaries are cut, as well as school programs (Cleveland) 18. Federal funding is no longer given to the school (Indian Hill)

Dance team affected; No new uniforms in ten years and unable to participate in some activities, as well as teachers being cut (Anderson, OH) 21. New school was build and teachers are already being laid-off (Arcanum) 22. Governor cut budget to $300 per kid (Sycamore, OH) 23. No busing, teacher budget cuts, no gym, no music, and no free electives in Lakota Local Schools (West Chester, OH) 24. Teachers went on strike due to several classes and teachers being cut ,and busing lost (Sheffield Lake, OH) • President oh Ohio University making cuts and threatening to take all of the students money; This will leave them with the minimum of everything 26. Overcrowding so much that a new high school is needed in Southwest Licking School District; Teacers are on carts and do not have their own classrooms, there is no transportation to and from the highschool, and French classes are being cut (Pataskala, OH)

  23. Three Rivers Schools: Combining Into One – New school won’t have a pool, football stadium, baseball field, soccer field, track, or tennis courts. There will only be an auditorium and gymnasium for assemblies and PE class. CT Young Elementary School: One of 3 schools in the Three Rivers School District that will all be combined into one, new school Taylor High School: Third school being combined Three Rivers Middle School: Second of the 3 schools being combined

MyIdeas For Improving Budget Cuts • Parent involvement (In school and at home) • Join organizations • Vote on school levees • Research new options for teaching -Safari Montage is an awesome digital learning program • Be a volunteer in your community (free tutoring services, etc.) • Make people aware of the issues • Spend less on unimportant things and more on what really matters • Find cheap ways for teachers to develop new skills • Switch to digital delivery of lessons • Only eliminate staff who are absolutely unnecessary
