This plenary session focused on feedback for the WHO External Quality Assurance Programme (EQAP) regarding the detection of Influenza A by PCR. Key strengths identified include its widespread availability and organization, while weaknesses pointed to the need for improved timing to accommodate seasonal fluctuations. Suggestions for improvements included expanding the types of influenza viruses included in testing and incorporating challenges in the system for more comprehensive evaluation. Participants also discussed their involvement in other performance evaluation programs and highlighted the need for evolution in testing methodologies and program scope.

Introduction to Group Work 1 Quality Assurance Programmes
Current WHO EQAP for detection of influenza A by PCR Strengths? • Only currently widely available Q/A WHO System. • Well organized. • Timely Weaknesses? • Timing could be improved to accommodate seasonality. Areas to improve? • Including an influenza virus that is not commonly recognized (H7 and H9). • Build in a challenge to the system (possibly including untypeables).
Other programmes: do you participate in the following? List the labs participating in the following programmes Fee-paying: • QCMD: NCLE (Lao PDR) • NEQAS: • CAP Free: • CDC: Performance Evaluation Program (PEP) Development In Progress (hopefully by end of 2011/early 2012. NCLE will participate in Piloting. Strengths and Weaknesses of the above programmes
Scope of EQAP: Needs to be expanded? • Virus culture NEAR TERM • Antivirals (phenotypic or genotypic) LONG TERM • Sequencing MID TERM • Serology LONG TERM • Others • Which labs/NICs are doing each of the above? NONE! • What methods? • If currently not doing, any plan in the mid-term or long term? • If offered, many NIC’swould be interested. • Priority of launching programme? TOP Priority – Virus Culture.
Preferred features of EQAP? • Number of samples: • current number satisfactory. • Type of samples: • current type satisfactory. • Frequency: Better • accommodate seasonality. • Time to reporting: • current timing satisfactory. • Format of reports: • Better to provide template that can be electronically edited and sent. • Others
