National Goals for Today • To share the National organization with the chapters. • To provide support for the chapters as needed. • Best Business practices. • Sharing other Chapter activities • Other Resources as needed (Bulletins, Membership brochures, history publication, etc.) • To maintain open lines of communication between National and all its chapters (19).

Overview - Governance • GWIS National Council-(four meetings per year, quarterly teleconferences and June National meeting) In attendance: • President • President-Elect • Vice-President • Past-President • Treasurer • Membership Secretary • Recording and Corresponding Secretary • Board of Directors • Editor • Three Standing Committee chairpersons designated by the President as having voting privileges

  7. Overview – (Governance, cont’d) Grand Chapter-two meetings per year. This year’s web conference is January 5, 2014 and the annual conference meeting is June 27, 2014. Includes: • The National Council • Historian • Archivist • Omega Chapter Committee chairperson • Chapter Presidents • One additional delegate from each chapter • All Standing Committee chairpersons

Fellowships • Fellowships are awarded to support the research of women in science (Over $500,000 awarded to over 400 women scientists since 1941) • Fellowships are an untapped resource to supplement/fund your research (10-14 awarded/yr) • Fellowships establish connections between past and present fellowships winners or current fellowship donor.

Fellowships (cont’d) • Eloise Gerry Fellowships • SDE Fellowships • Top scoring applicant is the Adele Lewis Grant Fellowship winner • 2nd is Hartley Corporation Fellowship • Nell Mondy Fellowships-2005 • Monique Braude Fellowship-2012 • JH Langenheim Fellowship-2011 • Vessa Notchev Fellowship • Thanks to significant contributors, mostly as bequests, our fellowships fund is substantial today. • We award $60-70,000 annually in Fellowships awards Dr. Nell Mondy

  14. Awards • Honorary Membership- Highest honor SDE/GWIS can bestow - Excellence in Scientific Research or Excellence in Science Teaching • First honoree was Florence R. Sabin in 1926, who was the first woman to hold full professorship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and first woman elected to the Natl. Academy of Sciences • Meritorious Award-recognizing members who have given outstanding and devoted service to SDE/GWIS at the National Level.

(Members only on website)

Our National Goals • To provide ethical and competent oversight and accountability for the organization as a whole for maintaining the 501(c)3 non profit status with IRS. • To provide guidance and support for chapters • Financial support and by-laws support for chapter start-up. • Assist with Chapter websites as requested. • Communicate to Chapter Liaisons and Chapter President • To provide a sustainable Fellowships program to foster the careers of women who conduct research in the sciences • To provide networking, mentorship and leadership opportunities for GWIS members • To have an annual meeting to do Organization’s business.

  19. Chapter Goals • To provide programs to further the goals of the organization • To communicate with chapter members • Website, newsletter, e-mail • To share successful programs with other chapters • Communicate with the National Organization • Provide leadership opportunities for members

  20. Our Legacy • Our legacy is the friendships we have made and the women we have helped to be productive women in science.
