  1. Moon Phases, Eclipses, and Tides Review

  2. Name the Moon Phase Waning Crescent

  3. Tides • How many tidal bulges are there at one time? Where do they occur in relation to one another? There are two tidal bulges at one time, they occur on opposite sides of the Earth from each other.

  4. Name the Moon Phase Waning Gibbous

  5. What word is being defined? • The phase of the moon where less than half but more than none of the visible hemisphere of the moon is illuminated Crescent

  6. Name the Moon Phase Full Moon

  7. Tides • How often every day does high tide occur? Twice

  8. Which type of extreme tide is depicted below? Neap Tide

  9. Name the Moon Phase Third Quarter (Last Quarter)

  10. Eclipses • What is the difference between an annular and total solar eclipse? An annular eclipse occurs when the moon is farther from the Earth, the disk of the moon does not completely cover the disk of the sun. The diamond ring affect occurs. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon is closer to the Earth, the moon appears to be the same size as the sun, and covers the disk of the sun completely.

  11. Name the Moon Phase Waxing Crescent

  12. Classifying the phases • Which phases of the moon are waxing? Waxing Crescent First Quarter Waxing Gibbous

  13. What word is being defined? • Period during which illumination of the visible surface decreases Waning

  14. What type of eclipse is this?

  15. Tides • How often do Spring tides occur? Twice a lunar cycle or twice a month

  16. What word is being defined? • Period during which illumination of the visible surface increases Waxing

  17. What phase of the moon is depicted below?

  18. Tides • How often do Neap tides occur? Twice a lunar cycle or twice a month

  19. Name the Moon Phase Waxing Gibbous

  20. Tides • What is a tide? Continuous rise and fall of water levels.

  21. What word is being defined? • The phase of the moon where more than half but less than all of the visible hemisphere of the moon is illuminated Gibbous

  22. Name the Moon Phase First Quarter

  23. Tides • Why does there appear to be more water at high tide and less water at low tide? The amount of water stays the same, but the water is displaced by the moon’s gravitational pull. When it’s high tide at the ocean your standing in, the water is displaced to that spot. When it’s low tide at the ocean your standing in, the way is being displaced to another spot on Earth.

  24. What type of eclipse is this?

  25. Classifying the phases • Which phases of the moon are waning? Waning Crescent Third Quarter (Last Quarter) Waning Gibbous

  27. Tides • How often every day does low tide occur? Twice

  28. Tides • During what moon phases do Spring and Neap tides occur? Spring tides occur during New and Full moons. Neap tides occur during First and Third (Last) Quarter moons.

  29. Which type of extreme tide is depicted below? Spring Tide

  30. What phase of the moon is depicted below?
