  2. Science at Shawnee Mission South Graduation Requirements 3 units of Science 1 Physical (for example – Physical Science) 1 Biological (Biology 1) 1 your choice

Regents Qualified Requirements (for admittance to one of the six state Universities…..KU, KSU, Emporia, Wichita State, Pittsburg, Fort Hays State) 3 units of Science 1 Biological (Biology 1 or 1H) 1 Chemistry or Physics 1 your choice (all 3 recommended!) After the 2011 freshman class, students will have to meet at least one other general education requirement

  4. Scholarship Considerationand out-of-state/private school admissions 3 units of Science 1 Biology 1 Chemistry 1 Physics

  5. Available Freshman Courses • Biology 1 H • Biology 1

  6. Biology 1 • Meets requirement for graduation • Studies the living world • Algebra 1 recommended (to be ready for physics/chemistry next year)

  7. Biology 1H • Daily homework & outside reading • Long term projects (similar to Science Fair Project) • Maturity to work independently • Be in geometry or higher (to be ready for chemistry/physics your sophomore year)

  8. Why take upper division courses? • A direct correlation between ACT scores and numbers of honors/AP courses. • Prepares for College level course work in friendly environment. • Necessary for the Project Lead The Way Signature Program

  9. What are Upper Division courses? • Any course that has a math requirement or specific prerequisite. For example: • Physics • Chemistry • Human Anatomy & Physiology • Any AP course (physics, chemistry, biology)

  10. What is the AP Exam? • AP = Advanced Placement • Tests are given in May over the topic being studied • An “AP transcript” is sent to the college of your choice for possible college credit. • Check with your intended University to determine their approach to AP credit.

  12. Physical Science • Studies physical & chemical principles • Prepares for future science courses • Preparation for the State Assessment Test

  13. Biology 2 AP • B or better in Biology 1 (regular or H) • Chemistry - previous or concurrent • Little lecture – much text-book reading • Class time lab oriented • Prepares for AP exam

  14. Meteorology This course combines physics, mathematics, and geography. It applies the principles of physics to the behavior of the atmosphere and its movements as affected by geographic factors. (does not meet Regents requirement)

  15. Chemistry 1 Prerequisites – Algebra 2 recommended Studies interaction and change between matter & energy. Goggles required ($3.00)

  16. Chemistry 1 H • Prerequisites – Algebra 2 Honors (concurrent OK) • Studies interaction and change between matter & energy. • More rigorous and faster pace than non-honors chemistry • Required summer assignment involving memorizing elements and the basic math of chemistry. • Weekly textbook reading assignments. • Assessments will contain free response questions. • Lab opportunities to use new understandings and critical thinking skills. • Includes an introductory unit on organic chemistry. • Goggles required ($3.00)

  20. Science & Survival • Meets requirement for 3rd science credit. (does not meet Regents requirement) • One-semester courses. • The theme for these this course will be our impact on our environment, and our responsibility to the future well-being of planet earth.

  21. Environmental Ed 1 • Counts as one science unit toward graduation • Requires C or above in Biology 1 • Requires responsible behavior and ability to supervise elementary children. • Curiosity about nature important (spend time outdoors) • Questions??? See Mr. Born in room 166

  22. Environmental Ed 2 • This course provides individuals with an in-depth study of environmental topics. Students explore career and volunteer opportunities in environmental science. Activities include teaching other students about nature and experiencing the daily maintenance of animal facilities and outdoor settings.

  23. Zoology This is a semester class that studies all the different types of animals. There is considerable dissection in the class with an emphasis on comparative anatomy. This class has a $10.00 lab fee.

  24. Physics 2 H/AP Physics 2 • Prerequisite Physics 1, & at least concurrent –Calc AB or BC

  25. Physics 2 H/AP Phy C CALCULUS BASED Prerequisite Physics 1, & at least concurrent –Calc AB or BC

  26. Chemistry 2 AP • Prerequisites – B or above in Chemistry 1. • Prepares for AP Exam • Applies higher level math to problems • College credit (JCCC)

  27. Human Anatomy & Physiology • Studies structure, functions & system interactions of human body. • Recommended for health services careers • $10.00 course fee

  28. Zoology Passing grade in biology required. 11th and 12th grade $10.00 course fee Study the similarities and differences of major Phyla in the animal kingdom 8 required dissections

  29. Environmental Ed AP Completion of Biology 1H and Chemistry 1/1H Studies the environment in preparation for the Environmental AP test.
