  3. It’s exciting to be in Hannover… • It’s rewarding to visit GEO and AEI, the source of a large part of the technology that LIGO is using and will incorporate into Advanced LIGO. • NSF is gratified to see the new collaboration between LIGO and Virgo working so well. LSC/Virgo Meeting • Hannover October 22, 2007 3

  4. CONGRATULATIONS TO LIGO… …for the successful completion of its mission-defining run, featuring • a sensitivity in excess of its design goal • the collection of one year’s data coincident among all detectors We’re (almost) ready for the next phase! LSC/Virgo Meeting • Hannover October 20-26, 2007 4

  5. Advanced LIGO actions • Baseline reviews in June 2006 and 2007 • Information item on readiness of Advanced LIGO presented to NSB in October 2007 • Final readiness review scheduled for November 2007 • Congressional appropriation — ? • Return to NSB to release funds for project

  13. NSF open funding opportunity Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/cdi/ Letter of Intent Window: October 30, 2007 - November 30, 2007 CDI seeks ambitious, transformative, multidisciplinary research proposals within or across the following three thematic areas: • From Data to Knowledge:enhancing human cognition and generating new knowledge from a wealth of heterogeneous digital data; • Understanding Complexity in Natural, Built, and Social Systems:deriving fundamentalinsights onsystems comprising multiple interacting elements; and • Building Virtual Organizations:enhancing discovery and innovation bybringing people and resources together across institutional, geographical and cultural boundaries.  This is a major, large-budget investment of NSF and is well worth     considering!
