  4. 1. Calendar and Timetable

  5. 2. Assessment • News article about a Eutrophication “event” in your country/region of origin • For informing general educated public NOT scientific experts in field (avoid jargon) • Two A4 pages maximum Font 12, 1.5 space • Max 1 photo, 1 other figure (eg map or graph) • Additionally 1 table • Max 5 references or websites • Submit to anewton.ualg@gmail.com with copy to Carme by 05July 2008 • File name Eutro08yourname.doc not pdf (corrections)

  6. 3. Programme of Module Lecture 1 • Defining Eutrophication • History of Eutrophication • DPSIR framework for Eutrophication Lecture 2 • Causes of Eutrophication, (Drivers and Pressures) Lecture 3 • Consequences of Eutrophication, (State and Impact) Lecture 4 • 4.1 Monitoring (State) • 4.2 Assessment (State+ Impact), • 4.3 Modelling, • 4.4 Remediation (Response) Lecture 5 • Human dimension, Social, Political and Economic aspects Lecture 6 • Case Histories and Research

  7. Requirements • There are no special requirements although some knowledge of environmental chemistry and ecology is useful. • A good grasp of complex ecosystem relationships is necessary

  8. Learning outcomes • After completing this module you should know: The historical and conceptual background on Eutrophication in both freshwater and marine waters. The aim is to provide an understanding of the alterations in the nutrient cycles of aquatic ecosystems within a societal and global • After completing this module you should be able to: Assess the causes and consequences of eutrophication in an aquatic ecosystem and communicate this to stakeholders

  9. Other skills You will also develop skills in communicating science such as • Preparing Material for Informing the Public, such as a press article
