  2. Lesson Goal: Learn about adjectives. Outcomes: Be able to . . . Define these terms: adjective, predicate adjective, and proper adjective. Identify the adjective in any given sentence and the noun it modifies. Recognize the linking verb construction that leads to predicate adjectives. Identify both predicate adjectives and proper adjectives in any given sentence.

  3. Starter #1Take out your comp book. Turn to the first blank page. In the upper right hand corner, write the following: Wed., Dec. 5, 2012 QW #32: In 10 years . . .Ten years from now, what do you think you will be doing? Complete the following sentence. Then develop a paragraph that explains your answer: In 10 years, I will be . . . Remember to write in complete sentences, avoiding fragments and run-ons. If you are not sure how to spell a certain word, just sound it out and circle it.

  4. Starter #2 Can you remember the definition for an “adjective”? An adjective modifies (tells more about) a noun. An adjective always answers one of three questions. What are those questions? Which one? What kind? How many? Usually an adjective appears just before the noun it modifies—but not always. When the noun/subject is followed by a linking verb, its adjective appears after the linking verb as part of the predicate. This is called a ________________________. predicate adjective The puppy became frisky. Where is the adjective and what kind of adjective is it? The puppy became frisky. “Became” is a linking verb. So frisky is a “predicate adjective.” This is like saying: The frisky puppy . . .

  5. Starter #3 Perhaps the easiest adjective to identify is the “proper adjective.” Does this term remind you of any other term you are familiar with? “proper noun” What is a “proper noun”? It’s a noun that names a particular person, place, thing, or idea. A “proper adjective” is an adjective formed from a proper noun. Sometimes it is identical to the proper noun from which it was formed. Guess what is true about all proper adjectives? They all begin with a CAPITAL LETTER. Examples: the Wyoming foothills Chinese checkers
