  1. AYSO National Coach Program Attacking Technically and Tactically

  2. The Calm Before the Storm!!!! • We all get excited about our new rosters each year • Always looking to see which of the best players we got, or didn’t get • We dream of how we are going to turn this team into our own Barcelona-esque Dynasty • We want our team to play like this team

  3. Workshop Objectives • “The only thing I would like is to have more control of the game in terms of possession.” – Jose Mourinho • Ability to break down game play into recognizable moments of attacking play… • Understand the different phases of play and different technical and tactical priorities existing in each… • Implement possession based training focused on technical concerns while improving tactics… • Develop player’s confidence on and off the ball to enhance their love of the game…

  4. Vision and Mission Statements: More than Words • Vision Statement: To Provide World Class Youth Soccer Programs that Enrich Children’s Lives • Mission Statement: To develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs in a fun, family environment based on the AYSO Philosophies • Deliver sound fundamental technical and tactical coaching • Must have balanced Technical and tacical training in order to deliver quality training and playing environments

  5. AYSO Philosophies:The Coaches Tool Box • Open Registration • Interest is the only requirement • Balanced Teams • Get the most out of each player assigned to your team • Everyone Plays • Get players to understand different roles • Positive Coaching • Positive feed back is key for player retention • Good Sportsmanship • Acknowledge other team for good technical and/or tactical play • PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

  6. Player Development:Importance of Balanced Technical and Tactical Training • Tactical and Technical elements are equally important • “If they can’t do it technically, they can’t do it tactically” • True, but players want to play the game… • Training should balance and address both economically (at the same time). • Psychosocial Elements

  7. Basic Pillars of Building Technique to Achieve Tactics • Ball Mastery • Individual development of first touch • Dribbling, receiving, ball control, etc… • 1v1’s with moves • Progression to implement elements learned in ball mastery to attack and beat a defender • Passing and receiving • Attacking defenders with using passing with teammates • Small Group Tactics • Goal Scoring • Creating goal scoring opportunities with numbers created from small group tactics

  8. Player Moments of Recognition:When To Apply the Attacking Principles and Objectives of Play Principles of Play • Penetration • Support • Width • Mobility • Creativity There are 5 identifiable moments in the game that influence decision making within the game… • Attacking Objectives • Maintain Possession • Advance the Ball • Score

  9. 5 Moments of Decision Making • When your team has possession of the ball • When the other team has possession of the ball • When your team wins the ball • When the other team wins the ball • On Set Pieces

  10. Cornerstones of Technical and Tactical Attacking Training • Possession • Patience to possess • Penetrating past the defense • Player Rotation during the play • Player insight and reading the game

  11. 4 Phases of Play • Build-up/Dispersal • Consolidation • Incising through the defense • Finishing

  12. Possession Play • What are the technical elements required for Possession based play? • Passing • Receiving • Head up when on the ball • Off the ball runs • Communication • Training possession will fill psychosocial elements as well as technical and tactical because the players are engaged and forced to work within a group

  13. Patience to possess • Develop patience, you develop constructive play • Avoid “Hopeful Soccer” • Hopeful soccer becomes overly direct play • Avoid forced passes • What techniques should we focus on here?

  14. Penetrate past the Defense • Timing when to get in behind the defense • Isolating opponents • Creating critical gaps in a defense to play through • Recognize when to play over the defense • Training players to find numbers up situations and change objectives when necessary

  15. Player Rotation • Train players to rotate with each other on the field • Create attacking triangles • Have an awareness that transition could occur at any time • Decisions based on these elements create player insight which creates the choice of techniques they use

  16. Managing play • Possession • Patience • Penetration • Rotation • Insight

  17. Attacking Objectives Score Advance Maintain Possession Advance the Ball Maintain Possession Maintain Possession Advance the Ball

  18. Phase 1: Build up and Dispersal • Managing attacking play in the Defensive 1/3 • Using the Goalkeeper as a field player when • Back pass is needed • Techniques needed: • One and two touch passing • Ability to shield ball from opposing players • Quick dribbling to the outside • only when necessary • Good vision to play ball to open objective • players wide or up the pitch • Good crossing/switching technique • Play can go to next phase when a player is • able to turn and play the ball forward without • pressure

  19. Phase 2: Consolidation • Add a back row player into the midfield • to increase attacking numbers • Ball movement and off the ball runs • to create critical gaps in the opposing • defense • Techniques needed: • Vision • One and two touch passing • do not hold on to the ball • Winning the ball in the air • Inside of foot and laces passing • Patience and communication are key

  20. Phase 3: Incising the Opponents back line • Still in middle 1/3 of the field • Playing the ball through or over the opposing defense • Playing the ball to weak side • Reset the attack to phase two when • needed • Techniques needed: • Vision • One and two touch passing • Player knowledge of showing fresh angles to the ball as it is passed • Forward players being organized with runs • One shows to the ball • One threatens behind showing forward • One stays Wide

  21. Phase 4: Finishing • 1v1 with keepers still a possibility, but not as likely • Box organization is important, especially on Crosses: • Three runs to cover critical areas in front of the goal: • Near post • Towards the goalkeeper • Towards Near Post • If scoring opportunity doesn’t happen, look to advance ball to a player who can score with one touch off of pass or reset to phase 3 • Techniques needed: • Courage to shoot the ball • Crossing • Heading • Volley with inside of foot or laces • Power and finesse shot

  22. Basic play management within Phases • Phases 1-3 should incorporate one and two touch passes as team builds up the field • Allows quick build-up • Phase 4 can employ more creativity to create goal scoring opportunity • Extra touches • Extra passes

  23. Balanced Training Models • Rondos • 5v2’s (sometimes called Monkey in the Middle) • Start simple • Progress to players following their passes to create movement and enhance psychosocial elements • Players will be more engaged than passing in pairs • 4v4+3 • Using neutral objective players to encourage directional play • Technical elements can be addressed using freeze methodology.

  24. Balanced Training Models (con’t) • Drills found in all of the AYSO training manuals can be used as well: • Examples: • http://bit.ly/XeVbOT • http://bit.ly/11zxgjU • The main differences that need to be achieved are speed of play and enhanced communication

  25. Can you see this a little better? • Let’s look at the very first video we put up and see what you now identify What did we see? What did we see in phase one? Did we see patience? Did we see bringing the ball back? Did we see good technique?

  26. Concluding thoughts • Engage your players in training • Provide an understanding of how play should be managed dependent on where they are on the field in the progression to goal. • Identify how your team can be successful in their attempt to maximize tactical advantage by understanding the technical aspects they need to do so.

  27. Conclusion • Any Questions? • Please remember to turn in your course evaluation form before you leave. • Have a great EXPO!!!!!!
