What is the Summer Enrichment Academy? -Three week, residential summer program for rising 10th graders. -2014 dates & locations -University of Kentucky, June 22nd-July 12th -Western Kentucky University, June 29th-July 19th • Offers experiences that will challenge students intellectually & build confidence about their ability to succeed in college
Purpose • The vision of the program is to offer an exciting enrichment experience that empowers and inspires students to deepen their content knowledge and apply that knowledge to relevant college and career opportunities. • The goal is to assist students develop both academic and behavioral tools for success in college, referred to as “college knowledge.”
THE Academy is offered to students: • Enrolled in a GEAR UP high school in Kentucky • Capable of rigorous work as evidenced by PLAN Scores. • Carries a minimum G.P.A of 2.0 or better. • Recommended by their teachers or counselors.
Camp Details… • This is a three week residential summer academy. • Students will be expected to stay on campus for the full three weeks including 4th of July weekend. • Students will be staying in college dorms supervised by seasoned college Resident Advisors (RA’s). • Students will be instructed by college professors. They are to maintain academic integrity at all times. • Students will also have Student Development Advisors (SDA’s) who will serve as mentors to the students. There will be 1 advisor per 10 students. • Medical services will be provided by the host institution. • All facilities on campus are ADA approved.
Academic Tracks • The Academy includes three tracks: • General Studies: Classes chosen by the student based on interest. Classes will involve a heavy research and writing component in the areas of Math, Science, and English/Language Arts. • Focus Area: Students will have the opportunity for in-depth work in a particular field including Health Science, Business, Communications, Agriculture, Global Studies and Engineering fields. • Café College: Gives students the opportunity to discuss the culture of college and career awareness in a fun, relaxed setting. This track will provide the critical thinking skills and academic tools required for success at the university level.
Academic Tracks Example of Daily Schedule (similar to college student schedule times) Weekday Mornings: General Studies Classes • MWF: 8:15a.m.; 10:30a.m.- 12:30p.m. • T/Th: 8:00am-9:15am; 9:30a.m.- 10:45a.m.; 11:00a.m.- 12:15p.m. Weekday Afternoons: Focus Areas sessions/field trips Weekday Evenings: Café College sessions in the residence halls Weekends: On-campus activities and field trips NOTE: No classes Friday, July 4th; student will participate in a community service project and local holiday festivities.

LOGISTICS • Transportation to and from the Academy will be provided for students • All meals are provided from campus dining facilities • Students will be supervised and chaperoned at all times by GUK staff and Resident Advisors • Students will be assigned a roommate (2-4 per room) and male and female rooms will be on separate floors. • Students must adhere to Academy code of conduct at all times • Students must remain on campus for the duration of the Academy (leaving on the weekends is not permitted)
APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS • Students must complete application package: • Student application form with parent/guardian signatures • Completed brief student essay • School staff recommendation form with at least two signatures from teacher, counselor, and/or principal • Applications must be submitted to GEAR UP College and Career Advisor by March 14, 2014 • Selection committee will review applications and select participants. Students will be notified of their acceptance.
