Understanding the Taiga: North America's Largest Forest Biome

The taiga, or boreal forest, is the largest biome in North America, Northern Europe, and Northern Asia. It extends from the tundra to the south, characterized by cold winters and mild summers with average temperatures ranging from -10 to 14°C and about 35 cm of annual precipitation. Dominated by coniferous trees like pine and spruce, the taiga’s ecosystem supports diverse wildlife such as moose, elk, and various predators. However, environmental issues like deforestation and pollution pose significant threats to this unique habitat and its inhabitants.

  4. Plants • Mostly conifers • Pine • Spruce • Fir • Don’t fall off • Survives in snow and cold • Deciduous Trees • Falls off • Changes color • Conifers needle life with pines the ground is shaded due to trees • Limited sunlight
