  4. Who was William morris? When William Morris was just nineteen years old he visited the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London. He was not impressed by the exhibits of machines and factories that were mass producing furniture and other items for people’s houses. He wanted to keep alive traditional crafts such as furniture-making and pottery that were made by skilled crafts people. He wanted everyone to have the opportunity to have beautiful things in their homes. Having studied architecture at Oxford University, he set up his own company to make beautiful things for the home. This was known as the decorative arts. Morris believed that craftsmen who made beautiful things were just as important as artists. This was the beginning of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Europe and North America ‘Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’
