  1. IAN Set-Up Let’s get excited!

  2. What you will need to get out: • 3 ring binder-1 inch! (not your school binder) • Your 5 divider tabs • Pencil and eraser

  3. Step 1 Open all packages. Put trash in the trash can that is coming around the room.

  4. Step 2: Tab 1“Intro” • Separate a white label paper from the sheet of them. • Write “IAN Explanation” neatly on the label. • Slide it in Tab 1. • Put divider tab 1 in you IAN.

  5. Step 3: Tab 2“Output” • Separate another white label paper from the sheet of them. • Write “Output” neatly on the label. • Slide it in Tab 2. • Put divider tab 2 in you IAN.

  6. Step 4: Tab 3“Warm-ups” • Separate another white label paper from the sheet of them. • Write “Warm-ups” neatly on the label. • Slide it in Tab 3. • Put divider tab 3 in you IAN.

  7. Step 5: Tab 4“Input” • Separate another white label paper from the sheet of them. • Write “Input” neatly on the label. • Slide it in Tab 4. • Put divider tab 4 in you IAN.

  8. Step 6: Tab 5“Vocab” • Separate another white label paper from the sheet of them. • Write “Vocab” neatly on the label. • Slide it in Tab 5. • Put divider tab 5 in you IAN.

  9. Now that you have completed the set-up, it’s time to explain each tab!

  10. Tab 1“IAN Explanation” • This section includes introductory materials, score sheets, rubrics, learning style profiles, etc. These items will remain in the binder for the entire year.

  11. Tab 2“Output” • The output pages of IAN in Tab 4 are for homework assignments.  Sometimes the homework may be a worksheet you insert after completion, but other times they will be IAN assignments that require special directions. These directions can be found here.

  12. Tab 3“Warm-ups” • Keep all warm-up assignments, questions and answers here. Not all warm-ups will require you to write down your answers.

  13. Tab 4“Units” (The Right Side/Input Side) • Input is all the information you are supposed to learn. Examples are notes, lectures, guest speakers, text or other sources, vocabulary words, video notes, teacher questions, readings, questions/answers, sample problems, etc. • Things to Know about Input Items: • Always start the page with the date and title • The Input items are for writing down information you are given in class • Cornell style notes are used during lecture, discussion, text, etc. Write up your study questions as soon as possible. • Write legibly. Use highlighting color to make important information stand out. • Write summaries at the bottom of your notes to reduce the amount you have to study.

  14. Tab 4“Output” • Output is how you show what you’re learning. Examples are data and graphs you generate, graphic organizers, drawings, writing (analysis, reflection, quick), riddles, concept maps, your questions, poetry, songs, cartoons, etc. • Things to Know about Output Items: • Always use color… It helps the brain learn and organize information • Quizzes and tests are Output items • Homework worksheets and assignments are Output items

  15. Tab 5“Vocab” • This is where information can be found that will help perform tasks in and outside of class. A set of definitions and word-maps will be useful when studying for tests and quizzes.

  16. Close your IAN, set it aside, and get out a piece of paper.For extra credit on your IAN cover: • Use your MEMORY to write down each tab label and what it is all about! • You will get 1 point for each correct tab label and statement. • Don’t forget to put your name, date, and class period in the upper right-hand corner of your page!

  17. Whew! Now you’ve got it!But there is one more thing to do today… • Your homework was to complete your own hand-made IAN cover. • It is finally time to attach it to your IAN! • If you have a view-binder (plastic sleeve on the outside), all you need to do is slide the cover into place. • If you do not have a view binder, we will use tape to attach your cover.
