  2. I. The New Kingdom (1567 B.C.-1085 B.C.) • Egypt becomes richer and stronger, cities grew larger (capital is Thebes) • Egyptian empire is formed • Pharaoh Thutmose III expands Egyptian control into Syria and Palestine.

  3. D. Hatshepsut • Step-mother of Thutmose III who ruled when he was a boy. One of only four female rulers in Egyptian history. • Interested in building temples and trading • Under her rule, Egyptian traders sailed to Punt in eastern Africa, brought back beads, metal tools, ebony, monkeys and incense.

  4. E. Priests vs. Pharaohs • Priests run the temples dedicated to the god Amon-Re. Temples were rich and powerful, pharaohs become jealous. • Pharaoh Amenhotep IV came to power in 1370 B.C. He closed the temples of Amon-Re and made a new religion: • One god – Aton • Changed his name to Akhenaton

  5. F. When Amenhotep dies, his son-in-law King Tutankhamen (“King Tut”) became pharaoh. • He was only 9! • Brings back the old Egyptian religion. • Dies when he is 18. G. Egypt loses power as priests and pharaohs fight. Their empire was too big to control. By 1150 B.C., the empire is gone. In 671 B.C., they were conquered by the Assyrians.
