Industrial Training • Part of EAC requirements for accreditation. • Employers will expect you to demonstrate a range of practical skills and soft skills as stated in Programme Outcomes. • Therefore, you must know the required POs and improve yourself accordingly. • Industrial Training is one of the means for the University and the company to measure your achievement of the POs.

  4. Objectives • Expose students to engineering practices in the industrial sector under the supervision of experienced engineer or technical staff. • Expose students on matters relating to human relations, engineering management, human resource management and the like in the industrial sector.

  5. Learning Outcomes On completion of this unit, a student shall be able to: • apply knowledge of engineering fundamentals. • demonstrate in-depth technical competence in the specific engineering discipline during the industrial training. • demonstrate problem identification and solving skill. • apply the relevant references, guidelines and code of ethics related to engineering practices. • apply systems approach to design and evaluate operational performance. • apply interpersonal communication skill with technical or/and non technical staff in the work place.

  6. Importance of ITP in OBE • To demonstrate achievement of Pos. • Technical skills. • Ethical and professional skills. • Teamwork and leadership skills. • Communication skills. • Awareness of cultural, global and environmental responsibilities in decision making. • Life-long learning.

  7. Placement Procedure • Choose your preferred company for industrial placement. • Call the company for placement availability first! • Submit your Resume and Industrial Placement Form to your Industrial Coordinator. • Coordinator will send application letter to the company for you. • Check on the website for your status regularly. • If rejected or not replied within 3 weeks, you may resubmit for another company until you got an offer. • Once accepted, you are not allowed to change anymore. • Submit indemnity letter and prepare to go for your industrial training. • Submit your report and log book upon completing your training. • Give a 15 mins presentation. • The End!

  9. Search for Company • Find company which offer training relevant to your studies. • Not allowed to work in company belongs to your family members or relatives. • 1. Refer to the UTAR’s company list. • 2. Find on your own, e.g. search the Internet or newspaper etc. • www.Jobstreet.com.my • www.JobsDB.com.my • www.yellowpages.com.my • 3. Ask family members, relatives and friends for recommendations. • Call the company for availability first! • Obtain the following: • Name, Address, Contact Person, Contact Email & Tel & Fax No.

Suitable Company’s Field of Industry • Should be an engineering or scientific environment (e.g. electrical systems, electronics, communications, computer technology) • System design, analysis, consultation, development • echnical marketing, documentation, presentation • Project planning, organization, execution, management • Machine operation, troubleshooting, verification, service and repair • Learning of technical skills and knowledge

Application Process • Download “Resume Sample” and “Industrial Placement Form” from the website. • Fill in and submit the softcopy to the Coordinator – by 30 June. • Check the website regularly for status update. • If rejected or not getting a reply after 3 weeks, search for another company and resubmit to the Coordinator. Repeat the process until you got an offer. • It is your responsibility to resubmit another company to the coordinator should you get rejected of did not get a reply from the company. • Sign indemnity letter and prepare to work. Indemnity letters from parents to UTAR, you and parents to company are not required unless requested by company. • Once accepted, you are not allowed to change anymore!

  12. Training Detail • 3 months or min. of 12 weeks training period. • From 1st Oct 2010 to 31st Dec 2009. • You may be visited by a Visiting Supervisor during the training. • In case you are not visited by a Visiting Supervisor, you need to download from the website and make sure “Student Appraisal Form” and “Student Visitation Form” are filled by your Industrial Supervisor and submit them. Note that the Appraisal form must be sealed in an envelope.

  13. Attitude on Industrial Training • Be present and punctual at the company • Put in efforts and interests in works • Flexible in team and projects • Have a positive, can-do attitude • Hunger for knowledge • Seek understanding (by asking) • Problem solving • Safety comes first!

  14. Assessment • Report & Log Book – 60 % • Student Appraisal – 30 % • Oral Presentation – 10 % (NEW!) • Submit Report and Student Appraisal by 21 Jan 2011 (must follow report guideline). • Oral Presentation will be scheduled in the 1st week of Jan 2011 trimester. • Students will only be graded PASS or FAIL. • Not contributing to GPA.

  15. Training Report & Log Book • Follow the instruction given by the Industrial Report Writing Guidelines available at the website. • Report not following the guidelines will be rejected. • You may write and type for the log book. • You may record your log book daily or summarize it weekly. • Marking scheme can be found in the Faculty Appendices on the website!

  16. Rules • The following will result in heavy penalty or possible failure: • Unapproved change of training company • Absence without notice • Late/no submission of report • Incomplete report or appraisal form • Unsuitable company (unrelated field, or the parent is the supervisor etc.) • Applying for leave without solid reasons during training is discouraged • ET/ES students would have to drop the unit (fee transferable) • ET – Terminated • ES – No progress (failing units equivalent to one semester)

  17. Remarks • Remember to register and pay your fees. • Midway through the training, if your student status turned into ET, you must withdraw from the training. The training will be invalid and you need re-register for training after you get back to EN status. • Inform your Industrial Supervisor first if you have any problem. • Contact Industrial Coordinator if problem persists.
