  9. Key Nutrition Messages • Daily Breakfast • Meals consisting of 3-4 food groups • Snacks consisting of 1-2 food groups • Increase consumption: • vegetables and fruits • milk and alternatives • non-sweetened drinks • Always positive messaging

Nutrition - Literacy ConnectionsActivity: Glorious Foods • Circle any food and drinks you had yesterday • if an exact food isn’t there, circle a food that is similar (e.g. circle pork chops for pork tenderloin) • Fold page in half and then in to thirds to make six equal sections • Four sections each represent a food group and the last section represents ‘other food’ • compare to food guide, use for goal setting

Nutrition - Literacy ConnectionsActivity: Rhyme Time • Reading and writing nutrition and food related rhymes • classroom activity, school wide activity, publish in newsletter • Connect topic to grade specific healthy eating expectations, connect to music • DPA connection - match each rhyme to a card suit and action or pick a card and class reads related rhyme while performing related action

Numeracy ConnectionsSugar Activity • Guess and count amount of sugar • Make sugar models (amount in a can of Coke) • 1 tsp sugar = 4g sugar (4.2g) • Suggested max 6tsp added sugar per day • Calculate for repeated days/months • Nutrition Facts Table • look at sugar, sugar calculations over time • Graph amounts of sugar vs. other nutrients

Numeracy Connections Activity: Cooking in The Classroom • Kids love to cook! • Halving and doubling the recipe • 1 tsp is what fraction of a tbsp? • If the recipe is started at 1:00pm, will it be finished by 2:00pm? • How many different ways can you cut a 30x30 pan of granola bars in equal pieces? • What is the smallest pan size that can be used for these ingredients? • Will the total volume of ingredients in this recipe fit in a 30x30x4cm pan?

  20. Numeracy Connections Activity: Compare Nutrition Labels • Look at the amounts of food • % of DVs • 5% DV or less is a little • 15% DV or more is a lot • Choose which is better and explain why you think it is a better choice?
