What Is Food Intolerance • It is a condition which refers to difficulty in digesting certain foods. • Food items which include, dairy products, grains that contain gluten, beans and cabbage etc are the food which is commonly associated with food intolerance. • Some food intolerance is caused by the deficiency of a particular enzyme. • Migraine, cough, and stomach-ache are the main symptoms of food intolerance.

  3. Causes Of Food Intolerance • Deficiency Of Enzymes For the complete digestion of our food, some enzymes are required. If the enzymes become insufficient , it will effect our proper digestion. Lactose intolerance is a case of enzyme deficiency. People who are lactose intolerant do not have enough lactase, an enzyme that breaks down milk sugar into smaller molecules. Enzyme deficiencies are a common cause of food intolerance.

Food Intolerance Caused by ChemicalsIn this case, symptoms occur when a certain chemical is digested and absorbed into the body.  There will be small amount of chemicals in food items such as amines in some cheeses and caffeine in coffee, tea, and chocolates. These chemicals can cause intolerance in some people. Some preservatives, artificial colours, artificial flavours and added MSG can cause a reaction.

  5. Toxins And Food PoisoningsSome food items will have natural like toxins or chemicals that can have a toxic effect on humans, causing diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting. Under cooked beans contains toxin and can create digestive problems. Mushrooms can also cause such food poisonings.

Salicylates are present in most plant-sourced foods, including the majority of fruits and vegetables, spices, herbs, tea, and flavor additives. Mint-flavoring, tomato sauce, berries, and citrus fruits have particularly high levels.

  7. Conclusion • The diagnosis of food intolerance is not that easy. This is because of the signs and symptoms of food intolerance and allergy often overlap. • Food intolerance symptoms take much longer to appear than food allergies. • Food intolerance test are available and the doctors may recommend a skin test or a blood test to rule out this intolerance.

Exclusion diets are extremely useful in controlling ones intolerance to food. • The suspected food is removed from the diet for a set of period, usually between 2 weeks and 2 monthsand then reintroduced.
