1. 564191 Current debates in Development Geography1st & 2nd periods - 5 credits (Paola Minoia) Course goals: 1 - To access and participate in debates in different topics that are relevant in development geography and practices. 2 - To reflect about theories and practices and real policies that are reflected in North-South cooperation. Contents: Participation in conferences, seminars, dissertations etc. proposed by the lecturer. Students reports with comments on both scientific and political relevance. NB: it is an advanced course, not advised for beginners in development studies Location and time: Two contact meetings: Tue 10th Sept 9:15-10:00 and Thu 12 Dec 12:00-14:00 @A115 5 external events: selected by the students from a list in Moodle. Students tasks: a) Literature reading before the event; b) Participation in the event; c) Report and certificate uploaded in moodle within a week after the event; d) Final learning diary and presentation at the last meeting. 2. 564024Tourism and Development2nd period - 5 credits (Paola Minoia) Course goals: 1 - To analyse characteristics and impacts of the current tourism trends worldwide and particularly in the Global South. 2 - To deconstruct official and marketing narratives about sustainability. 3 - To recognize potentials for community participation and environmental responsibility. Contents: Lectures will introduce on aspects of tourism growth; economic, political and spatial implications of tourism particularly in the Global South; sustainability narratives; environmentalism and commodification of cultures and nature; alternative tourisms; local participation and community based tourism. Practical activities will be based on the lectures and for a smaller group only. Priority will be given to more advanced students. Also: 812158Introduction to Global South Studies IGSS1st & 2nd periods - 5 credits (Nina Himberg) Course goals: To present various disciplines´ approaches to development and to working in developing countries. The course will cater for multidisciplinary learning and familiarize the students with the Global South related studies offered and research conducted at the various faculties of the University of Helsinki. Contents: Learning about development and developing countries from expert lecturers coming from within and outside the university. The topics range from food security, climate change and health to human rights, nature conservation, gender politics and religion. The key concepts of development and the interfaces of various disciplines will be introduced. Location and time: The course will be held on Fridays 6.9.-13.12.2013 at 10-12. Lectures in the first period will be held at the Center campus (University main building, hall 7), and in the second period at the Viikki campus (Bio2-building, hall 2012).
