  10. What is Democracy? Characteristics: • A political system for choosing and replacing government through Free and Fair Elections • The active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life. • Protection of the human rights of all citizens. • A rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens.

  11. Point One: Free and Fair Elections • The people choose and hold leaders accountable. • Government based on consent of the Governed.

  12. Free and Fair elections continued: • Elected people should listen and do what the people want! • People have the right to criticize the government.

  13. Free and Fair elections cont. . . • Voters must be able to vote in secret, free of intimidation and violence. • An impartial tribunal must resolve any disputes about the election.

  14. Point Two: Active Participation • Citizens have an obligation to become informed about issues and vote. • People must respect the law and reject violence. • All groups have equal opportunity to have their voices be heard.

  15. Point Three: Human Rights • Freedom of Religion – no one can dictate what you can believe or think. • Freedom of culture – even if it is minority.

Miranda Rights reading • What are the “Miranda rights”? • How did the Miranda rights start? • If an officer comes up to you and begins to question you, but has not arrested you, do you have to answer their questions? • If you are arrested and you immediately begin making excuses about why you were involved, does that help you or hurt you? • If the police officer forgets to read you the Miranda rights, does that mean what you say cannot be used in court? • Before you are arrested, if you are innocent and do not proclaim innocence, can your silence be used against you? • What is the best way to handle a situation where a policeman is asking you questions in an accusing way?

  22. Equality under the law • You have the right to know what you are accused with. • You have a right to a fair, speedy, and public trial by an impartial court. • Torture and cruel and inhumane treatment are absolutely forbidden. What about non-citizen suspected terrorists?

  25. Rules of Debate • You must use EVIDENCE! • You must avoid personal or outrageous attacks. • You must have something REAL to say – don’t make it up on the spot. • You must speak loud enough to be heard. • During the crossfire, you must not get angry or excessively loud.
