Texas would get 10 million dollars to pay off debt to Mexico • 4. Popular sovereignty would decide slavery issue in New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah when they applied for statehood • 5. Fugitive slave law

  3. Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 Government officials could arrest any person accused of being a runaway slave Suspects had no right to a trial to approve they were falsely accused. Northern citizens had to help capture accused runaways John C. Calhoun had hoped that this law would force northerners to admit that slaveholders had rights to their property. It did the opposite - the North was outraged!
