  2. Background • National Early Warning Score = NEWS • Based on vital signs observations • Developed in Medical Assessment Unit • Identify deteriorating patient earlier • Adopted by many UK hospitals (inc throughout Wales)

  3. Method Hospital-wide data filtered into two datasets: • Medical Admissions (35 643 p.c.e.) • Surgical Admissions (22 769 p.c.e.) Each split into Elective & Emergency Demographics & means calculated

  4. Sample Results – AUROCsRisk of (Precedence) Death within 24 hours of an observation set Medicine Surgery Emergency: 0.92 Elective: 0.95 Emergency: 0.89 Elective: 0.96

  5. Conclusion & future work… • Our results show NEWS is suitable for use with Surgical patients • Next paper under preparation: comparison of NEWS with other EWS systems
