  2. First, fold your paper into a small column and large area. **Page 43 & 45 ** If you take the edge of your paper and match it to the red line on the left page, it will make the perfect size! 2 1/2”

  3. Date Next, record the date in the upper right corner. This goes on all pages! If you put your page numbers there, write it under or next to the page number. 2 1/2”

  4. Date Cell Theory & Levels of Organization Next, write the topic on the top line. You will record the topic on every page of notes. 2 1/2”

  5. CONGRATS! • You have set up your notes for the first time. • From now on, when I say “Set up your Cornell Notes”, this is what I expect: • Folded paper (I will always tell you the page in the notebook we will be using) • Date • Topic (I will give this to you for each set of notes)

  7. Why “Cornell Notes”? • Proven to be the most effective way for you to learn and remember information! • Prepare for high school and college • Can be used as a study guide • This is the favored method of notes by colleges

  8. Example (Diagram copied during lecture) (Questions about it ) • How do the ticks find the cattle? • Why don’t the ticks usually kill their host? • How could tick infestations in cattle impact humans?

  10. At the end of each note TOPIC (not page!) you will write a 3 – 4 sentence summary of everything you have learned. • This is done after the class notes and after you fill in the questions. • The summary will sometimes be your homework.

  12. Writing our Questions • We are now going to practice writing questions to go along with the notes we just wrote. We will refer to “Grandma’s House” in our notebook for key words to include in our questions. • I will give you three questions as a guide, but you can write your own using the words from “Grandma’s House”. • You will be expected to write questions with your notes and it may be homework if not finished in class.

  14. 10/12/09 Cell Theory & Levels of Organization Cells:- specialized to perform a certain function(job) Examples: bone cells, heart cells, nerve cells Tissues:- made up of cells that are similar in structure and function that are joined together Examples: layers of bone, parts of heart, parts of brain

  15. 10/12/09 Cell Theory & Levels of Organization Organ: made up of groups of different tissues that work together Examples: heart, brain Organ System: made up of groups of organs that work together to perform a specific function Examples: respiratory system, cardiovascular system, nervous system Organism - an entire living thing that carries out basic life functions

  16. On your own: • Finish writing questions to go along with the notes. • Write a 3 – 4 sentence summary about cell theory and the levels of organization on the last page of notes. • Anything not finished in class will be your homework for tonight!
